Teamsters Support Legislative Move to Empower Workers with Their Labor Rights



The International Brotherhood of Teamsters has expressed strong support for the recently introduced Know Your Labor Rights Act. This significant piece of legislation is spearheaded by Senators Josh Hawley (R-MO) and Maggie Hassan (D-NH), alongside Representatives Riley Moore (R-WV) and Marie Gluesenkamp Perez (D-WA). Their goal? To enhance workplace transparency by compelling employers to clearly inform their employees about federally protected labor rights.

In a press statement, Teamsters General President Sean M. O’Brien highlighted the ongoing struggles faced by workers in nearly all sectors. He elaborated, saying, “Greedy corporations and corrupt managers in nearly every sector of the economy put in overtime trying to stop working people from organizing. But the right to organize is sacred, and American workers should be informed of their legal right to do so.” O’Brien further pointed out that the Know Your Labor Rights Act is designed to empower working individuals by mandating employers to display critical information about labor rights prominently within the workplace, ensuring that all employees are well-informed and equipped with the knowledge to advocate for their rights.

Under the provisions of Section 7 of the National Labor Relations Act (NLRA), which was enacted by Congress back in 1935, workers are granted the right to organize, join a union, and enter into collective bargaining agreements. However, a significant gap has persisted: employers have not been obliged to inform their employees about these fundamental rights. The new legislation seeks to rectify this oversight by imposing a requirement that employers publicly display labor rights information in visible areas of the workplace, and also provide this information to new hires. Failure to comply with these requirements could result in penalties, marking a critical step towards ensuring that workers are not kept in the dark regarding their rights.

Polling data reveals a remarkable consensus among the public, with 71 percent of Americans in favor of mandates requiring employers to inform workers of their NLRA rights. This statistic underscores a growing desire among citizens for greater transparency and fairness in workplaces throughout the nation.

Senator Hawley’s bill is emblematic of an expanding bipartisan movement in Congress dedicated to bolstering workers' rights and protections. Notably, the Faster Labor Contracts Act, introduced in the House of Representatives last September, proposes a requirement for employers to initiate collective bargaining discussions within ten days of a successful union vote, further highlighting the legislative trend toward worker empowerment.
