Inbound Rail Etiquette Promotion Videos Launch on Airlines and Airports in Japan

Promoting Railway Etiquette for Inbound Travelers in Japan

The Japan Private Railway Association, headquartered in Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo, under the leadership of Chairman Takehiro Sugiyama, has announced the upcoming launch of educational videos focusing on railway etiquette for inbound travelers starting January 2026. This initiative aims to improve the welcoming environment for foreign visitors to Japan as part of sustainable tourism development.

In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, the railway industry has experienced a significant decline in demand. Although there are signs of recovery, the road to returning to pre-pandemic levels of ridership remains challenging. It is with great optimism that the private railway sector looks forward to an increase in inbound tourism, which is expected to be a major driver for their business recovery.

However, there are concerns regarding foreign visitors' unfamiliarity with Japanese railway etiquette. Instances of confusion and issues due to a lack of understanding can detract from their travel experience. To combat this, the Association emphasizes educating travelers about the unique customs of using Japan’s railway system. By doing so, they hope to create a more pleasant environment for both international visitors and Japanese users, ultimately increasing the likelihood of foreign tourists returning for additional visits.

To achieve these goals, a video titled "Do's and Don'ts" has been produced, highlighting essential railway manners in English. The video combines live-action footage and animations, accompanied by clear narration. Key topics addressed include the importance of waiting in line, ensuring that large luggage does not block aisles or doors, and other crucial etiquette tips.

By fostering awareness of local customs, the Japan Private Railway Association hopes to welcome tourists with open arms, ensuring that their journey through the heart of Japan is both enjoyable and respectful of its cherished traditions.
