Southern Living Unveils the 2026 Idea House in Fredericksburg, Texas
Southern Living’s 2026 Idea House: A Contemporary Retreat
Southern Living, the esteemed brand under People Inc., has unveiled a stunning addition to its renowned Idea House series. Featured in the October 2026 issue, this year’s house celebrates the essence of Texas Hill Country living, showcasing a modern farmhouse design that perfectly marries contemporary aesthetics with local charm. Located in Fredericksburg, Texas, the 4,000 square-foot home is poised to capture the hearts of many.
A Glimpse into the Design
Fredericksburg has recently earned a reputation as one of the South's Best Small Towns, making it an ideal backdrop for the 2026 Idea House. Situated merely three miles from the town center, this contemporary farmhouse is nestled in a Southern Living Inspired Community known as Friedën. This location offers residents an immersive experience in the scenic beauty and cultural richness of the Hill Country.
To bring the vision of the Idea House to life, Southern Living partnered with three talented interior designers from Texas: Jean Liu from Jean Liu Design, Marcus Mohon of Mohon Interiors, and Paloma Contreras from Paloma Contreras Design. Each designer contributed their unique style, reflecting the warm and inviting atmosphere characteristic of the region. The house boasts standout features, such as a vaulted living room ceiling crafted from white oak, a kitchen inspired by the local color palette, and a casita reminiscent of Fredericksburg’s historic Sunday houses.
Highlights and Features
Sid Evans, Editor-in-Chief of Southern Living, remarked on the home's ability to embody the unique spirit of Texas Hill Country. He stated, "This year’s Idea House encapsulates what makes the Texas Hill Country so special. It draws design inspiration from the landscape, setting a benchmark for homes that are both stylish and warm."
Bringing this project to fruition is a dedicated team, including builders Melanie Sparks and Chris McGinley of Kurk Homes, architect Andrew Bray from Mustard Architects, and landscape designer Melissa Gerstle of Melissa Gerstle Design. Collaboration is key, as Chris Wilde from Fredericksburg Development, Inc. partners with Skip Preble and Thomas Thör Peterson from Heirloom Co. to ensure exquisite execution.

The success of the Idea House is further enhanced by eleven key sponsors, each contributing products that elevate the home’s design and functionality. Among these sponsors are notable names such as ADT, James Hardie, Marvin, Sherwin-Williams, Volvo Cars, and others. Their involvement illustrates the synergy between innovative design and quality products.
