In a recent survey conducted by Cross Marketing, a significant number of Japanese individuals reported an increased awareness of sun protection as the summer months approach. The study focused on sunburn awareness among adults aged 20 to 69 and revealed fascinating insights into the growing concern regarding sun exposure.

The survey found that 49.8% of respondents are mindful of sun exposure, with 18.6% expressing that they are "very concerned" about it. The data indicates a notable difference in awareness levels between genders and age groups. While older women, particularly those in their 60s, demonstrate a high level of concern (80%), a surprising trend emerged among younger men in their 20s, where 40.9% reported being mindful of sun damage.

Focus Areas: Where Does Sunburn Worry Reside?



Participants were asked to identify which body parts they are most concerned about regarding sun exposure. The most significant worry is the overall face, with 49.5% citing it as a primary concern. This is particularly pronounced among women, with a staggering 70% specifying their face as a focus area. Other notable areas of concern include the arms and neck, which both drew attention from approximately 20% of the participants.

Top Three Sun Protection Methods



When exploring preventative measures against sunburn, respondents identified three main strategies they utilize: sunscreen, hats, and parasols. Notably, hats emerged as the most favored method among men, with 19.1% of male respondents opting for this protective gear. In contrast, female respondents favored both sunscreen and parasols, each commanding popularity among over 50% of the group.

Budget Considerations for Purchasing Parasols



When it comes to buying new parasols, the survey showed that 30.1% of participants find themselves in the budget range of 2,000 to 3,999 yen, marking it as the most common price range for these sun protection items. Additionally, 23.1% plan to spend under 2,000 yen, reflecting a general trend towards affordability in sun protection accessories.

Attitudes Toward Sun Exposure



In terms of attitudes towards sun exposure, 28.7% of respondents expressed fear about the potential skin damage from sun exposure, like dark spots and wrinkles. Notably, many women shared a dual concern about the hassle of sun protection measures as well, indicating a strong wariness around sun exposure.

Survey Overview



The internet-based survey used the unique self-survey tool QiQUMO, targeting 1,100 respondents across all 47 prefectures in Japan from May 22 to 23, 2026. The findings indicate an elevated awareness of sun protection, suggesting that societal attitudes may be shifting towards greater caution in the face of rising UV exposure.
