Halogen Ventures Takes a Bold Step in Alabama with Nine New Investments

Halogen Ventures' New Investments in Alabama

In a significant move for the Alabama startup ecosystem, Halogen Ventures has announced its first nine investments within the state. This marks a pivotal moment for the venture capital firm led by Jesse Draper, as it seeks to drive economic growth and transform the entrepreneurial landscape one year after a strategic state investment in partnership with Innovate Alabama.

Halogen Ventures is particularly notable as the first out-of-state venture capital firm receiving funding through Innovate Alabama for their third fund. Over the past year, the team has actively engaged with local entrepreneurs and state leaders, visiting innovation centers and research labs across cities like Birmingham, Huntsville, and Mobile. By hosting pitch competitions, they have successfully connected local founders with new funding opportunities, gaining media attention nationally.

“Investing in Alabama is more than just providing capital,” Draper emphasized. “Our mission is to eliminate barriers and build sustainable economic opportunities for female entrepreneurs.” Currently, Alabama faces challenges as it ranks last in the nation for female entrepreneurship. However, the tech sector has shown remarkable growth, increasing by 50% since 2018, with projections indicating that it could double by 2030.

Venture capital investments in the state reveal a promising trend as well. In just a decade, investments escalated from $3 million to a staggering $321 million in 2023, underscoring the increasing attractiveness of Alabama's startup ecosystem. Draper describes this venture as a “calculated bet” on an undervalued market with extraordinary potential. “We’re only just getting started; the quality of startups here is exceptional!”

Among the nine companies that Halogen Ventures has invested in are a variety of innovative startups that illustrate the diverse opportunities in Alabama:

  • - Moxi: This unique childcare and co-working platform aids families in accessing quality care and local services.
  • - Auditocity: An HR tech enterprise streamlining compliance workflows through AI automation.
  • - Croux: A staffing marketplace driven by AI that connects job seekers with flexible, well-paying opportunities.
  • - Skyfire AI: This company focuses on advanced analytics and AI solutions for enterprise decision-making processes.
  • - Nyad AI: An operations intelligence platform designed for scalability and efficiency.
  • - Doctours: A medical tourism marketplace that enhances accessibility and transparency in healthcare for patients nationwide.
  • - Yard: This firm is pioneering autonomous robotics solutions for outdoor maintenance tasks.
  • - KrillPay: A digital wallet offering inclusive fintech services across the U.S., Africa, and Canada.
  • - Accelerate Wind: A company deploying small-scale turbine technology to furnish clean and affordable energy solutions.

These recent investments contribute to Halogen’s impressive portfolio, which includes over 85 female-led businesses, six of which are unicorns, collectively valued at more than $15 billion. The firm’s established successes, such as the parking technology innovator Metropolis and Upwards, the nation’s leading childcare provider, are also well-represented in Alabama.

In the last quarter, the companies under Halogen’s banner successfully collected more than $2 billion in follow-up funding, showcasing the strong momentum behind the investments made by Draper and her team.
