Cultural Exchange Event: Noh Theatre Connects Japan and Serbia Ahead of Expo

Cultural Exchange Event Between Japan and Serbia

From June 15 to 17, 2026, the Yamamoto Noh Theatre Foundation from Osaka, Japan, will host an extraordinary cultural exchange event in Belgrade, Serbia. This event aims to bridge the gap between the Osaka Kansai Expo 2025 and the Belgrade Expo 2027.

This unique initiative celebrates the appointment of Sachiko Nakashima as the PR ambassador for the Japanese Pavilion at the upcoming Belgrade Expo, marking a significant step in promoting Japanese culture abroad.

The First Noh Performance in Serbia

As part of this event, the Yamamoto Noh Theatre introduced Noh, Japan's classical theatre, to Serbian audiences for the first time. The event will showcase a variety of Noh performances alongside a variety of cultural activities.

Yamamoto Noh Theatre has been actively disseminating the charm of Noh as “a captivating art form for modern times.” The collaboration with Nakashima, a key figure in promoting the cultural heritage of Japan, led to a series of performances designed to highlight the depth and richness of this unique art form.

During the Osaka Kansai Expo, Nakashima produced a signature pavilion titled “Aquarium of Life,” integrating innovation with tradition. This reflects the ongoing endeavor to merge classical art with modern creativity, as seen in the newly created Noh plays performed during the expo, including “Noh of Life: Jirin’s Cycle” and “Noh for SDGs.” Throughout the expo's duration, numerous Noh performances and events will take place, passionately reaching out to a global audience.

The Theme of the Belgrade Expo

The Belgrade Expo's theme is “Play of Humanity: Sport and Music for All,” while the theme for the Japanese Pavilion emphasizes “Connecting Playfulness with Japanese Spirit.” Nakashima's thematic pavilion also focuses on playful creativity, facilitating cross-cultural encounters and collaborative spaces among diverse communities. Noh, steeped in tradition, has historically been celebrated by powerful figures such as Oda Nobunaga and Tokugawa Ieyasu, exemplifying the cultural significance of performance as a form of play.

This event commemorates Nakashima’s role as the ambassador and aims to connect Japan and Serbia through the shared joy of play, fostering goodwill in anticipation of the Belgrade Expo. Launched as a legacy project of international exchange from the Osaka Kansai Expo, this initiative strives to unite the world through playfulness.

Noh Performance and Workshops

The cultural exchange event includes a speech by Nakashima, a Noh performance of “Takasago,” and a workshop detailing the history of Noh, alongside hands-on experiences with Noh masks and costumes. Participants will engage with practitioners of Noh, learning about this 700-year-old art form's rich history and artistic ethos.

Noh Play: “Kiyokyo”

One of the central works performed will be “Kiyokyo,” based on the historical narrative found in “Heike Monogatari.” It depicts the spirit of Kiyokyo, who, after the Heike clan's downfall, encounters his wife posthumously—a commentary on the tragic sorrow of war and a prayer for peace. The themes resonate universally with those affected by conflict and embody the powerful philosophy of reconciliation and peace that cultural exchange promotes.

The performances are set to feature Yamamoto Akihiro in the lead role, accompanied by talented performers from KURAGE Band, blending traditional Noh with contemporary music in an innovative presentation designed to engage and resonate with audiences.
