Pacific School of Religion Hosts 2025 Earl Lectures on Migration and Narrative Transformation

Exploration of Migration Narratives at PSR

The Pacific School of Religion (PSR) is set to host its 2025 Earl Lecture Series from October 17 to 19, centered on the critical theme of "Migration: Shaping the Narrative." This annual event has established itself as a significant platform for addressing vital theological, pastoral, and social issues since its inception in 1901.

The Earl Lectures have a rich history, showcasing various thought leaders, artists, and activists who contribute meaningful insights into pressing societal challenges. This year, the series promises to be especially poignant given the current contentious political climate surrounding immigration.

A Much-Needed Dialogue Amid Political Tension

Rev. Dr. David Vásquez-Levy, the President of PSR, has emphasized the importance of highlighting migration as an essential human story, rather than merely a political issue. He noted that during these tumultuous times, it is crucial to center the lived experiences of migrants, challenging narratives that often lead to their dehumanization. The Earl Lectures will serve as a forum for attendees to listen, learn, and engage with these narratives in a spirit of solidarity.

The lecture series will kick off with the PSR Distinguished Alumnx Banquet, creating an opportunity for reunions and shared reflections among alumni and attendees. Following the banquet, the Saturday schedule is packed with a full day of lectures and breakout sessions featuring diverse perspectives on the theme of migration.

Inspiring Speakers

Prominent speakers in the series include:
  • - Luis Argueta: A renowned Guatemalan filmmaker and human rights advocate known for his compelling storytelling and commitment to social justice.
  • - Cynthia T. Buiza: The former Executive Director of the California Immigrant Policy Center, she has been at the forefront of advocating for immigrant rights and policies.
  • - José Luis Marantes: Co-founder of the United We Dream Network, he is a dynamic voice in the movement for immigrant justice and policy reform.

These speakers will not only share their insights but will also foster discussions that inspire action and reflection among attendees, equipping them to challenge the status quo.

Finale with a Message of Hope

The series will conclude on Sunday, October 19, with Rev. Dr. Vásquez-Levy preaching at the First Congregational Church of Berkeley, reinforcing the weekend's themes of compassion and advocacy for migrants.

Tickets for the Earl Lectures are currently available, with early bird pricing available until September 12. The event invites participation from a wide array of individuals, including theologians, community leaders, activists, and artists, emphasizing the collective effort required to address these pressing issues.
