Galați County's First U.S. Investment
Galați County, strategically located at the crossroads of Europe, recently embarked on a noteworthy mission to the U.S., marking its first investment outreach. Between September 6-13, leaders from Galați partnered with AngelouEconomics, a well-respected American consulting firm with an impressive portfolio of $30 billion in various projects. This mission aimed to attract American investors by showcasing the unique advantages Galați offers as a potential hub for advanced manufacturing and other knowledge-intensive sectors.
The Significance of Galați County
The rich history of the Danube River has been a conduit for commerce and culture across Europe for centuries. Galați County, situated along one of its widest stretches, stands as Romania’s largest river port. It serves as a vital logistical hub linking Central Europe with the Black Sea. The Port of Galați, with its direct river-sea access and integrated rail connections, is crucial for modern industrial and distribution operations in the region.
Among the notable industrial entities in Galați is Liberty Steel Galați, recognized as Romania's largest integrated steel producer. Additionally, the presence of Damen Shipyards Galați, one of Europe’s leading shipbuilding corporations, demonstrates Galați's capacity for advanced manufacturing. Supporting these industries is Dunărea de Jos University, which produces over 2,600 graduates annually in fields such as engineering and maritime studies.
Galați’s strategic position is enhanced by its proximity to a U.S.-led NATO naval base located just 50 miles away. The region hosts a U.S. military training range, further solidifying its importance as a location for investment. With plans for increased international passenger and cargo air connectivity, the county is poised to respond to expanding logistics needs, particularly in light of Ukraine's reconstruction efforts.
A Bold Invitation to American Investors
During the Austin mission, Galați leaders emphasized the county's readiness to welcome American firms. They envision partnerships in financing, building, and operating a new airport expected to serve over 3 million people, thereby acting as an entry point for further economic development. Costel Fotea, President of the Galați County Council, remarked, “This is the moment for Galați. We have a working port, a strong industrial tradition, and engineers who can deliver projects fast.” The message was clear: for U.S. partners, Galați provides an environment to quickly establish operations, initiate projects, and build supplier networks.
Galați's workforce, particularly its bilingual engineers and skilled technicians, represents a cost-effective talent pool for international projects. Andrei Buzatu from AngelouEconomics noted, “Galați connects the EU to the Black Sea, the Middle East, and Central Asia. For companies rethinking supply chains, Galați offers a chance to start small, move fast, and scale.”
A Platform for Collaboration
The Austin program included meetings with state and local officials, educational institutions, businesses, and corporate executives. The culmination of this outreach was a networking event designed to highlight Galați as a manufacturing, logistics, and tourism hub. It offered opportunities for river cruises and eco-adventures in the picturesque Danube Delta.
Angelos G. Angelou, the founder and CEO of AngelouEconomics, emphasized that “Visionary leadership is turning Galați's natural advantages into investable projects.” Investors are increasingly looking for reliability, scalability, and trustworthy partners—qualities that Galați possesses in abundance.
The mission successfully showcased Galați's potential to American investors and opened avenues for future collaborations. With a wealth of opportunities on the table, the invitation remains: explore Galați, experience its vibrant port, meet the dedicated shipbuilders and steel manufacturers, visit the local labs, and recognize why this distinctive region may soon become a pivotal connection point for U.S. investments in Europe.
