Embracing a Transformative Future: The Regenerative Cities Manifesto
On October 28-29, 2025, Tokyo Building Co., Ltd. held the international conference "RegenerAction Japan 2025" with the theme centered around "regeneration." The event brought together 37 experts and innovators from various fields, discussing 25 diverse topics ranging from food and culture to economics and environment. During this transformative conference, Tokyo Building unveiled the "Regenerative Cities Manifesto," an important declaration aimed at accelerating the transition to a regenerative society.
Understanding the Regenerative Cities Manifesto
The Regenerative Cities Manifesto lays out a vision for the future we collectively aspire to as we strive towards establishing Regenerative Cities. Developed in collaboration with the Future Food Institute, the manifesto seeks to create a global movement transcending individual organizations. The cultural aspects of Japan, such as "wabi-sabi" and "omotenashi," resonate deeply with the ideals of regeneration. By leveraging Japan's unique values, Tokyo aims to position itself as the role model for "Regenerative Cities" on an international scale.
Progress of Domestic Co-Creation Projects within the Regenerative City Tokyo Initiative
In alignment with the "Regenerative City Tokyo" initiative, presented at the previous conference in November 2024, progress on various domestic co-creation projects was shared with partners during the current conference. The goal is to create over ten collaborative innovation projects that enhance the well-being of the planet, society, and individuals by the end of 2027, primarily focusing on the Yaesu, Nihonbashi, and Kyobashi (YNK) area. By expanding and embedding these projects within the fabric of the city, Tokyo aspires to become a new role model for regenerative cities, akin to global cities like London, Paris, and New York by 2030.
Connecting Urban and Regional Resources: The Yuugawara Project
A notable co-creation project involves Tokyo Building, Yuugawara Town, and the LLC Sea Vegetable in Kanagawa Prefecture. Utilizing corporate hometown tax donations, Tokyo Building initiated support for seaweed cultivation and product development, harnessing the abundant natural resources of Yuugawara Town. This collaboration aims to foster a circular society by bridging urban and regional aspects, thereby maximizing the local area's rich marine and hot spring resources.
Innovative Projects Shaping the Urban Landscape
In collaboration with the company Livness, the urban regeneration project "Mokutei" showcases a new cyclical relationship between the urban environment and nature. This project exemplifies the Regenerative City initiative's first demonstration project.
Additionally, a community beer project, sparked by a participatory workshop at RegenerAction Japan 2024, led to the development of the craft beverage "FIRST STEP," representing a seamless blend of Japan's culinary traditions and modern sustainability practices.
Innovative Kitchen 8go: Culinary Regeneration
Opening in February 2025, the Innovative Kitchen 8go, located in the basement of Tokyo Building Yaesu, is spearheaded by Michelin-star chef Tatsuya Noda, focusing on regenerative modern tapas. The restaurant emphasizes harmony and circularity in food production, presenting menus made from local ingredients and products previously deemed waste, aiming to foster action-oriented change among its patrons.
Thought Leadership: Transformative Talks
Throughout the conference, various sessions featured distinguished speakers sharing their insights on regenerative leadership, community-driven initiatives, and sustainable practices in multiple sectors. These discussions highlighted the essential role of collaborative leadership needed to tackle climate change and other pressing challenges.
Engaging Activities and Workshops
Engaging workshops and immersive experiences were also an integral part of the conference, covering topics such as regenerative leadership and business exploration, offering participants unique perspectives on driving sustainable practices in their communities.
With a total attendance of approximately 463 people, the RegenerAction Japan 2025 conference has marked a significant step towards achieving a regenerative society. The comprehensive efforts discussed throughout this event aim to not only initiate change but to create lasting impacts through collaborative innovation and transformation.
