SHIRO K11 Musea: A Cultural Fusion in Hong Kong
On May 1, 2026, SHIRO will proudly unveil its first-ever store in Hong Kong, located in the artistic and commercial hub of K11 Musea. This unique store combines cultural appreciation with innovative design, featuring bamboo and tin, materials deeply rooted in Hong Kong's heritage and contemporary artistry.
Hong Kong, known for its vibrant blend of Eastern and Western cultures, is an ever-evolving metropolis brimming with history. It has developed a distinctive hybrid culture after over a century of British colonial rule. The city's drive for excellence inspires stunning skyscrapers and an electric atmosphere. In this context, SHIRO aims to reflect these influences through its interior design, utilizing bamboo and tin to create a welcoming space that resonates with the local environment.
Bamboo Scaffolding: A Living Cultural Heritage
A highlight of the design narrative is the bamboo scaffolding, a technique used since the Han Dynasty for constructing mobile Peking Opera stages. In 2014, the method was recognized as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Hong Kong, showcasing not only its historical significance but also the craftsmanship involved. Bamboo's lightweight and rust-resistant qualities make it indispensable in Hong Kong's humid climate, seamlessly adapting to the city's architectural demands. Additionally, the charming tin mailboxes, often found at the entrances of traditional tong laus (tenement buildings), have been custom-made by skilled artisans, exemplifying the ingenuity behind tailor-made design elements in the city.
This combination of materials has profoundly inspired SHIRO’s store design. The bamboo used for scaffolding typically gets discarded after use, but SHIRO aims to repurpose this bamboo, giving it a second life as part of their store's ambiance. The carefully aged bamboo not only tells a story through its scars and color changes but also pays homage to the historical significance of Hong Kong. Furthermore, tin will serve functional purposes like counter areas and stock doors, emphasizing a commitment to sustainability and creativity.
The Zero Blender Lab: A Unique Fragrance Experience
At the heart of the new store is the “Zero Blender Lab,” designed as a unique encapsulation of SHIRO’s ethos. Here, customers will engage in a hands-on experience, crafting their own fragrances. Utilizing discarded raw materials that would otherwise go to waste, participants will be immersed in a process reminiscent of a perfumer's workshop, promoting a sustainable approach to fragrance creation that aligns with SHIRO’s goal of zero waste by 2024.
The lab will host a selection of prototype fragrances, reflecting the cyclical nature of production and creativity. By breathing new life into these otherwise overlooked materials, SHIRO aims to share a spirit of 'pay it forward', encouraging customers to think about sustainability in new ways. The unique fragrances available will include “Proto Soap” and “Proto White Lily,” each thoughtfully crafted to evoke the essence of nature and humanity’s connection with it.
Celebrating Local Culture with 'Flower Tea' Fragrance
In addition to immersive experiences, SHIRO will launch a special edition fragrance, “Flower Tea,” to celebrate Hong Kong’s rich tea culture. With the essence of refreshing aromas and harmonious blends, this fragrance encapsulates the spirit of sharing moments around a round table.
In Hong Kong, drinking flower tea is a beloved ritual, often associated with moments of rest and community. Its vibrant floral notes combined with citrusy freshness aim to invoke a sense of calm amidst the bustling pace of the city, allowing individuals to feel 'at peace'. SHIRO's introduction of this fragrance is a unique way to connect with local customers, inviting them to embrace their daily routines accompanied by a scent reminiscent of serenity and rejuvenation.
