This special event will take place on May 24 and 31, 2026, and aims to merge the realms of scent and visual art, curated by the renowned architectural mind, Tadao Ando.

The centerpiece of this installation is the original room fragrance, "ESSENCE OF AONAGI", crafted to encapsulate the natural beauty of the Setouchi region. Specifically, the display draws inspiration from the art of nature painter Emi, who will showcase her piece titled "RAW" at the hotel. Emi will also hold a solo exhibition named "SANCTUARY" in May 2025, marking the beginning of a journey that the 2026 event will explore.

During the 2026 event, visitors will get an exclusive opportunity to experience several new artworks inspired by the natural essential oils that make up "ESSENCE OF AONAGI”. In collaboration with the home fragrance brand Apt15 from Shikoku Chuo City, this installation promises to create a harmonious intersection of aroma and art, allowing guests to immerse themselves in a serene environment and spend quiet time reflecting on their senses.

Both Emi and Kana Manabe from Apt15 will be present during the event, offering guests a chance for direct interaction and conversation about their processes and inspirations.

A Journey from "SANCTUARY" to the Present

Looking back at the previous year, Emi's exhibition "SANCTUARY" attracted a multitude of visitors who resonated with her art, including the featured piece "RAW". A year later, the exhibition in 2026 is deeply rooted in the memories and experiences derived from time spent at Setouchi Retreat Aonagi. Emi reflects on this connection, noting how the tranquil surroundings influence her latest creations.

The Scent of ESSENCE OF AONAGI

The origin of "ESSENCE OF AONAGI" lies in its thoughtful composition of ten natural essential oils designed to elevate one’s intuition while enjoying art in an Ando-designed space. - Top Notes: Yuzu, Iyo Orange, Lemon

- Middle Notes: Coriander, Lavender, Neroli, Cardamom, Kurobushi from Ishizuchi
- Base Notes: Patchouli, Blue Cypress

Upon application, the fragrance opens with the bright and crisp notes of Iyo Orange, Yuzu, and Lemon, reminiscent of Ehime’s citrus bounty. As it develops, calm notes of lavender and coriander weave seamlessly into its composition, creating a soothing and deep aroma experience. The underlying warm notes of patchouli and blue cypress provide a grounding finish that evokes the rich natural landscape of Setouchi, lingering pleasantly in the memory.

Amidst this sensory experience, Emi has personally painted each fragrance bottle, ensuring that every piece is unique and carries a distinct expression. The packaging features handcrafted washi paper from Shikoku Chuo City, promoting a warm tactile experience.
