2025 Train and Station Etiquette Survey Results
In a recent survey aimed at improving manners in trains and stations, the Japan Private Railway Association, headquartered in Chiyoda, Tokyo, received responses from 5,202 individuals between October 1 and November 30, 2025. The findings reveal concerning trends in commuter behavior that affect the overall travel experience.
Overall Results
1.
Coughing or Sneezing Without Consideration: This behavior ranked first, maintaining its top position from previous years. The prevalence of coughing and sneezing in crowded spaces has raised alarm and discomfort among passengers, particularly in light of ongoing public health concerns.
2.
Crowding at Doors: Newly introduced this year, this behavior made its debut in the ranking at fourth place. During busy hours, lingering near the doors obstructs the flow of passengers entering and exiting, leading to longer waiting times and potentially causing delays.
3.
Smartphone Usage: Ranked fifth, this issue has escalated from ninth place last year. Many respondents expressed concerns regarding the use of smartphones in cramped train conditions, highlighting not just distractions, but also the dangers associated with using devices while walking, especially on the platform.
4.
Seating Etiquette: Complaints regarding inappropriate seating behaviors, such as not maximizing space or stretching legs, took second place, as did noisy conversations and rambunctious behavior in third place. These behaviors continue to strain the experiences of fellow passengers, prompting a call for greater awareness and consideration.
Inbound Rankings
The survey also aimed to understand how inbound travelers perceive and contribute to manners on Japan's railways. With a significant number of international tourists, the importance of recognizing their behavior has become paramount. Out of the total respondents, 77.1% reported experiencing annoyance due to certain actions exhibited by foreign visitors.
Top Annoying Behaviors by Foreign Travelers:
1.
Loud Conversations and Roughhousing: Claiming the first spot, this behavior was noted by 69.1% of respondents, suggesting a substantial perception of disturbances caused by partying or boisterous conversations among tourists.
2.
Luggage Handling: Ranking second, issues surrounding the way bags or umbrellas are managed contributed to an inconvenient travel atmosphere.
3.
Seating Etiquette: Coming in third again mirrors concerns of local travelers about how space is utilized while seated.
