Celebrating 70 Years of Important Intangible Cultural Heritage at Seibu Ikebukuro

Celebrating 70 Years of Important Intangible Cultural Heritage

This year marks a remarkable milestone in Japan’s cultural history—the 70th anniversary of the establishment of Important Intangible Cultural Heritage holders, commonly referred to as “living national treasures.” This special designation was formalized under the Cultural Property Protection Law, which aims to preserve and promote traditional crafts and arts that embody the nation's rich cultural legacy.

To commemorate this significant event, Seibu Ikebukuro has curated an exhibition showcasing a unique collection of contemporary craftworks from both past and present masters of modern art. Visitors will find exquisite pieces that not only reflect the skills and dedication of Japan's most celebrated artisans but also the enduring influence of traditional techniques.

Among the featured artists is Kuroda Roan, a 20th-century master renowned for his profound statement, "The vessel is the kimono of the cuisine." His works continue to inspire artists and collectors alike, and his piece, "Sometsuke Oshidorie Hanabitsu," created for the 1963 exhibition at the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo, is a stunning highlight of the show. This exquisite flower vase, measuring 22.5 cm in diameter and standing at 30.5 cm tall, carries a hefty price tag of 26,400,000 yen, illustrating the value placed on masterful craftsmanship.

Additionally, the exhibition features other esteemed artisans like:
  • - Konji Fumimoto, known for his beautifully vibrant "Iroe Kinsai Hyotan," a pair of jars that stand 14.3 cm tall and sell for 8,470,000 yen.
  • - Haijin Kato, whose "Iroe Kinrande Geshun Hanamon Mizudashi" water container exemplifies his unique style, priced at 2,640,000 yen and measuring 16.2 cm in diameter.
  • - Nodō Fujimoto, displaying his "Kusa Shirayuyu Gaki Iroe Gin Kinsai Onagana Tsuunobu" square box, elegantly crafted for both aesthetic and functional appeal, available for 2,970,000 yen.
  • - Goyou Hirata, who contributes a charming creation titled "Jukushi" priced at 2,640,000 yen and showcasing intricate detailing.

This exhibition not only serves as a tribute to the past but also emphasizes the relevance of traditional crafts in contemporary society. As these living national treasures share their art forms, they foster a greater appreciation among the public for Japan's craftsmanship and cultural identity.
