EWTN Spain Goes 24/7 Ahead of Papal Visit: A New Era of Catholic Programming

EWTN Spain Expands to 24/7 Programming

EWTN Global Catholic Network has exciting news to share! EWTN Spain announced a significant expansion in its distribution of Catholic content, now broadcasting 24 hours a day, seven days a week. This transition marks a vital step for the network, allowing Spanish viewers to access engaging Catholic programming directly on Digital Terrestrial Television (DTT) without requiring any subscriptions.

The timing of this expansion couldn't be more fortuitous, as it aligns with the upcoming visit of Pope Leo XIV to Spain, set to occur from June 6 to June 12—this will be the first papal visit in 15 years since Pope Benedict XVI visited in 2011. This live coverage promises to be profound, as the network is set to showcase the Pope's activities and messages, fostering a deeper connection with audiences nationwide.

José Carlos González-Hurtado, president of EWTN Spain, has long envisioned a broader reach for Catholic media. He stated, "If faith is truly part of our lives, it cannot be confined to a single moment—it must be present in all of them. Expanding to 24/7 programming allows us to walk with people throughout their day, offering a constant point of encounter with Christ."

The network's journey began back in 2020 when EWTN Spain started with just four hours of original programming each day across three platforms: Movistar+, Vodafone, and Orange. This initial strategy already allowed them to reach over seven million households, in addition to a robust audience on their YouTube channel and website, which together garnered over 45 million views monthly. The recent transition to DTT more than doubles this potential reach, ultimately aiming to touch the lives of millions more in Spain.

Since its inception, EWTN Spain has provided both original content and locally adapted broadcasts from EWTN's broader programming produced in the U.S. and Latin America. With the recent expansion, all content will now be developed in Spain, catering specifically to Spanish audiences, ensuring that it's relevant and engaging for viewers.

Michael Warsaw, Chairman of the Board and CEO of EWTN, emphasized the importance of this initiative in a time when Spain is facing complex societal discussions about human dignity and engagement with the Church. He remarked, “EWTN is stepping forward in a larger way—accompanying those who are searching and offering the clarity and hope of the Gospel to every soul hungry for the truth.” Warsaw was present at the Madrid announcement, sharing the exciting news on the day that would have marked Mother Angelica's 103rd birthday. This specific date symbolizes a continuation of her legacy and mission to spread the Gospel without compromise.

The expansion of EWTN Spain aims to deliver more engaging content and family-friendly programming, ensuring that the message of hope and faith is accessible to all corners of Spain. The network’s unwavering dedication to providing impactful Catholic media to its audience exemplifies its commitment to enriching lives and reinforcing community ties.
