The Home Depot Foundation's Commitment to Disaster Preparedness
In a significant announcement during National Hurricane Preparedness Week, the Home Depot Foundation declared its investment of over $5.5 million to enhance disaster preparedness and recovery efforts across the United States. This initiative aims to fortify communities against the relentless onslaught of natural disasters, particularly as recent years have seen a sharp increase in the frequency and severity of catastrophic events.
The Foundation's investment comes on the heels of a previous pledge of $3 million for wildfire response in Southern California, bringing the total funding for the 2025 disaster season to an impressive $8.5 million. Erin Izen, Executive Director of The Home Depot Foundation, highlighted the urgency of the situation: “In 2024, our country faced over 27 natural disasters, each costing at least $1 billion. It is imperative to not only assist in the immediate aftermath of these events but to proactively prepare communities before the storms strike.”
One of the pivotal focuses for the Foundation is collaboration with various nonprofit organizations to provide necessary resources for disaster preparedness. Initiatives include equipping resilience hubs and community centers in areas like Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands with essential emergency supplies, in conjunction with partners such as Mercy Corps. Additionally, programs that train volunteers and enhance community response capabilities are being prioritized, notably through support for organizations like Inspiritus.
The Foundation is also revamping its established relationships with long-standing partners like Operation Blessing, which has played a crucial role in disaster response efforts. This year, Operation Blessing will pilot a new program for assembling First Responder and Kid Care Kits. The kits will categorize vital supplies, including comforting items for children such as coloring books, snacks, and stuffed animals. Diego Traverso, the organization's Senior Director of Global Disaster Response, asserted, “We aim to have these kits prepared well in advance of emergencies to allow our teams to focus on essential relief services like providing hot meals and clean-up efforts.”
Moreover, long-term recovery initiatives are a crucial component of the Home Depot Foundation’s strategy. Many partner organizations are dedicated to assisting communities in rebuilding after past disasters. For example, Rebuilding Together New Orleans will utilize the grant to repair at least 20 homes affected by Hurricane Ian, enabling families to return to safe living conditions. Similarly, Habitat for Humanity of Butte County will lend support for ongoing fire recovery efforts in Northern California.
The collaborative efforts do not stop there; Team Rubicon and the Home Depot Foundation will focus on training 9,000 additional volunteers in skilled trades while also undertaking the task of rebuilding 20 homes that were lost to previous storms.
Additionally, partnerships with organizations such as the American Red Cross, Convoy of Hope, and World Central Kitchen ensure that ongoing disaster response and recovery efforts remain robust. Such collaboration encompasses a wide array of activities, including pre-positioning vital supplies, procuring food, and facilitating shelter along with emotional and financial assistance for families affected by natural disasters.
As a nonprofit established by The Home Depot, the Foundation is dedicated to enhancing the lives of U.S. veterans and supporting communities affected by natural disasters. Since its inception in 2011, it has allocated more than $550 million in aid and has improved the conditions of over 65,000 veteran homes and facilities. With a target of investing $750 million in veterans' causes by 2030 and $50 million in skilled trades training by 2028, the Home Depot Foundation demonstrates its commitment not only to disaster preparedness but to the broader welfare of the communities it serves.
