Exploring the Rich Heritage of Japanese Paper at Haibara Exhibition

The Art of NIPPON’s Beautiful Paper: Haibara Exhibition

In a celebration of Japan's refined artistry, the Haibara Exhibition is set to showcase an extensive collection of exquisite paper products that have transcended time. This event will take place from August 8 to September 13, 2026, at the Ishikawa Prefectural Museum of Art. This exhibition marks the bicentennial journey of Haibara, a traditional washi company established in 1806 in Nihonbashi, Tokyo, known for its superior woodblock printing techniques and aesthetics.

Haibara's Legacy

Throughout its history, the Haibara family has integrated the talents of contemporary artists into their unique designs. This collaboration began in the early Meiji period when Naokichi Hayabara, the third-generation head, engaged with prominent artists such as Shibata Zeshin, Kawanabe Kyosai, and Kawabata Gyokusho. The fourth generation, led by Shinta Hayabara, continued this immersive exchange with renowned figures like Takehisa Yumeji and Kawase Hasui, creating timeless designs that still resonate today.

The exhibition focuses on the impactful relationships between Haibara and these celebrated artists, exhibiting a stunning array of over 500 traditional paper products, including chiyogami (decorative paper), uchiwa-e (fan prints), and illustrated envelopes. You’ll also have a chance to view rare drafts and essential documents associated with these artists, highlighting the intricate beauty that characterizes Japan's paper artistry.
