BorgWarner Expands Partnership with SAIC Maxus Through Advanced Transfer Cases Production
BorgWarner, a global leader in automotive technology, is set to strengthen its collaboration with SAIC Maxus by supplying advanced transfer cases for their vehicles designed for export. Announced on February 6, 2025, this partnership emphasizes BorgWarner's extensive technical capabilities and its commitment to supporting innovation in the automotive sector.
The partnership entails the development and manufacturing of two distinct types of transfer cases at BorgWarner's facilities in China. The first, an on-demand transfer case featuring mechanical locking, and the second, a high-torque part-time transfer case, are both expected to commence mass production in 2026. These sophisticated products are designed to significantly enhance the performance of SAIC Maxus vehicles, ensuring they are well-equipped to compete in international markets.
Isabelle McKenzie, Vice President at BorgWarner, highlighted how this relationship has evolved over more than a decade, stating that their technological advancements will not only fortify SAIC Maxus's position in China but also facilitate its expansion into overseas markets. This strategic move is crucial as the automotive landscape shifts towards more sustainable and performance-oriented vehicles.
BorgWarner's transfer cases integrate cutting-edge technology, including the tried-and-true HY-VO® driveline chain, designed for high-speed operation. The systems will enable drivers to choose between 2 Wheel Drive High Range (2H) and AUTO modes, optimizing fuel efficiency while driving on paved surfaces. Unlike traditional full-time 4-wheel drive (4WD) systems, these on-demand solutions provide enhanced safety, handling, and overall drivability. When off-road conditions prevail, the mechanical locking mode ensures superior performance for climbing and recovery scenarios.
As the automotive industry increasingly pivots towards electric vehicles and advanced drive systems, BorgWarner's focus on research and development within China positions it as a key player. BorgWarner has established itself as a transformative force in mobility innovation for over 130 years, with a significant focus on sustainability to promote a cleaner, safer future for all.
This collaboration with SAIC Maxus is expected to further solidify BorgWarner’s market share in the rapidly expanding segment of Chinese domestic brands being exported around the world. By enhancing the capabilities of SAIC Maxus vehicles, BorgWarner stands to contribute substantially to the competitive landscape of the global automotive market.
Looking ahead, the challenges facing the industry are significant, from supply chain disruptions to evolving technologies. Yet, BorgWarner’s commitment to innovation and superior performance equips it to navigate these challenges successfully. The landscape of the automotive industry will dramatically evolve in the coming years, and partnerships like the one between BorgWarner and SAIC Maxus are pivotal for driving that change. Together, they are set to redefine the capabilities and market potential of vehicles in both domestic and international arenas.
