The survey collected insights from over 5,800 residents, providing a robust analysis of the satisfaction and preferences among those living in the region.

Akita's Most Livable Cities

The 2026 Most Livable Cities Ranking has revealed that for the seventh consecutive year, Akita City has claimed the top spot. This beloved city is known for its rich greenery, making it an attractive place for residents. With a vibrant commercial area surrounding the station and many administrative institutions close by, it has excelled in five out of eight satisfaction factors assessed. Historical sites like Akita Castle and Kubota Castle, now transformed into parks, add to the city's appeal as a space for relaxation and leisure.

In second place, Kahoku City has made notable progress, rising in rank, while the Senboku District’s Misato Town secures the third position. Kahoku is situated in the southwestern part of the prefecture, bordered by the breathtaking Chokai Mountain to the south and the Sea of Japan to the west, offering residents a naturally enriched environment. Moreover, it's just an hour's drive from Akita City, enhancing its desirability as a residential area.

The survey results from different municipalities reflect a comprehensive evaluation over the last five years from 2022 to 2026. This evaluation also includes earlier responses from 2021 to 2019 to ensure comprehensive data coverage, with a minimum participant number of 50 for each locality being met through aggregating data when necessary.

Desired Cities in Akita

The 2026 Most Desired Cities Ranking has shown a strong preference among residents, placing Sendai City at the top for the fifth consecutive year. Following closely are Akita City and Tokyo’s 23 Wards, securing the second and third ranks, respectively. The enduring presence of cities from the Tohoku region, specifically three in the top five, reflects residents' ongoing attachment to their locales.

Interestingly, a significant 74.3% of respondents expressed satisfaction with their current living situations, with many acknowledging they did not have a specific desired city to move to, while a satisfactory 17.1% indicated they wish to continue living in their current residences.
