Unveiling SHUWAN: A New Era in Sake Vessels
The SHUWAN brand, under the leadership of Ken-Tai Shojima, is thrilled to announce the official launch of its new sake vessel series, "陶胎漆器" (Ceramic Lacquerware), which harmoniously combines porcelain and lacquer. This series is designed to enhance the authentic aroma and flavor of sake, leveraging ancient traditional techniques along with a unique design philosophy known as "YURAGI."
A Special Shape for Aroma and Taste
One of the standout creations is the "TENSHUDO Special Pouring Vessel" (not for sale), featuring an innovative form that merges elliptical and circular designs. The thoughtfully adjusted diameter and height ensure the optimal escape of excessive scents, allowing sake's balance of flavors to shine. The delicate design of the bottom and rim further enhances the liquid's smooth flow, creating a pleasant mouthfeel.
Features of SHUWAN's Ceramic Lacquerware
- - Precision and Comfort: The unique combination of the precision of porcelain with the soft texture of lacquer creates a refined sake experience, enhancing its aroma and complexity.
- - Traditional Colors: Available in two exquisite colors—"朱" (red) and "黒" (black)—each piece is crafted through meticulous adjustments of pigments and lacquer blends. These create a deep, rich appearance that elevates the overall sake experience.
- - Meticulous Craftsmanship: The creation process includes over 31 distinct steps, employing specialized tools and fine polishing techniques to refine both form and finish. Seasonal and weather considerations inform the lacquer's blending and application, creating a dynamic interplay of flavors.
- - Lacquer's Unique Texture: Weighing only 90 grams, the lightness of the ceramic combined with lacquer’s rich texture makes these vessels feel naturally comfortable in hand.
Collaboration with Renowned Artist
The SHUWAN series of ceramic lacquerware is supervised by the celebrated lacquer artist Eiko Tanaka from Kaga City, Ishikawa Prefecture. Her expertise and traditional craftsmanship have played a pivotal role in the development of this unique product line.
Eiko Tanaka's Message
"As sake becomes more diverse and delicate, the vessels used should also reflect a wide range of shapes and materials. SHUWAN is one answer to that need. With its design that gently balances temperature and feel, it bridges the gap between lacquer and porcelain, presenting a fresh sensibility. This project not only reconnects traditional techniques across regions but also embodies my belief in 'reconstructing tradition to explore new possibilities.'"
Opening New Horizons for Sake
SHUWAN aims to evolve the experience of enjoying sake, allowing for a deeper appreciation of its sophisticated aromas and flavors. By transcending the limitations of traditional sake cups and wine glasses, SHUWAN connects sake breweries, potters, chefs, and enthusiasts worldwide.
By transforming the experience of sake, SHUWAN aspires to deliver a new standard that resonates with the essence of Japanese culture. Thus, the realization that changing the vessel can indeed expand the world of sake.
