Henkel Expands Manufacturing Facility in South Dakota

Henkel, a leading global firm in the production of adhesives, sealants, and functional coatings, has demonstrated its commitment to innovation with the recent expansion of its manufacturing plant in Brandon, South Dakota. This development marks a significant milestone as Henkel focuses on advancing technologies that propel the electric vehicle (EV) and electronics sectors.

Investment and Growth

The company has invested approximately $30 million into the expansion, which has effectively doubled the facility's size from 35,000 to 70,000 square feet. This enhancement not only boosts production capabilities but also positions the plant as Henkel's premier manufacturing site for thermal management and adhesive solutions in North America. The project received additional backing from South Dakota's government and various economic development organizations, indicating the community's support for Henkel's vision.

Bjoern Jackisch, Senior Vice President of Operations Supply Chain at Henkel Adhesive Technologies, expressed, "This expansion marks a significant milestone in Henkel's journey to support the long-term growth of the EV and electronics markets with sustainable, high-performance solutions." This investment underscores Henkel's dedication to sustainability, innovation, and strategic partnerships with customers and the community.

A Commitment to Sustainability

What sets the Brandon facility apart is its commitment to green practices. It is the first plant in Henkel's North American Adhesive Technologies business to earn LEED® (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification. The expansion project is registered with the goal of achieving LEED Silver®, reflecting Henkel's dedication to sustainable operations and responsible growth. This eco-friendly approach not only showcases Henkel’s commitment to the environment but also enhances its reputation as a leader in the industry.

Cutting-Edge Production Capabilities

With the latest expansion, Henkel has installed more mixers, allowing for high-volume production of advanced thermal management and adhesive solutions. These products are essential for ensuring the optimal performance and safety of automotive batteries and electronic components. By significantly increasing production capacity, Henkel aims to meet the growing demands of the EV and electronics markets across North America effectively.

Marcel Fleck, Senior Vice President of Automotive Components, stated, "This expansion is more than an investment in infrastructure – it's a testament to a shared vision between industry, government, and community." As Henkel launches its new North America Battery Application Center in Madison Heights, Michigan, this expansion further enhances collaboration with customers, aiming to accelerate innovation and foster a sustainable future in manufacturing.

Revolutionizing Operations and Workforce Empowerment

The Brandon facility is currently home to over 100 employees, whose skills and dedication drive the company's innovative culture. The expansion supports Henkel's strategic objectives to digitize its operations for greater efficiency and sustainability, introducing automated workflows and temperature control systems. Originally established in 2009, the facility's significant investment began in October 2021, followed by the construction phase commencing in September 2022.
