Centrus Energy to Invest Billions in Southern Ohio, Creating Over 300 Jobs

Centrus Energy Announces Plans for Major Expansion in Ohio

On September 25, 2025, Centrus Energy Corp. unveiled ambitious plans for a significant expansion of its uranium enrichment facility located in Piketon, Ohio. This initiative has garnered support from notable figures including Ohio Governor Mike DeWine, U.S. Senator Jon Husted, and U.S. Congressman Dave Taylor. Together, they aim to bolster domestic uranium enrichment capacity, which is essential for supporting America’s energy future. The expansion is projected to create around 300 permanent operational jobs, alongside an estimated 1,000 construction positions. This strategic move is made to enhance low-enriched uranium (LEU) and high-assay, low-enriched uranium (HALEU) production, critical to the country's energy landscape.

A Multi-Billion-Dollar Investment

The total investment necessary for this expansion is expected to exceed several billion dollars, contingent upon receiving federal funding from the U.S. Department of Energy to ramp up LEU and HALEU production. According to Centrus CEO Amir Vexler, "The time has come to restore America's ability to enrich uranium at scale." He emphasized that this project aims to lessen dependence on foreign entities and foster American technological capabilities through domestically manufactured resources.

Centrus has successfully raised over $1.2 billion through two convertible note transactions within the preceding year when this announcement was made. Additionally, the company has secured around $2 billion in contingent purchase commitments from utilities, which reflects the growing demand for domestic uranium enrichment. Vexler noted the importance of U.S. technology that not only supports energy independence but also creates thousands of indirect jobs across the nation.

Uniting Forces for Progress

To support the expansion, Centrus has partnered with various organizations, including JobsOhio and Ohio Southeast Economic Development (OhioSE), which will assist in the recruitment process to fill the expected new job openings. Hiring efforts are already underway, and the company participated in the Ross County Employment Expo, where potential candidates could learn more and apply.

Governor Mike DeWine remarked on the significance of this expansion by stating that uranium enrichment in Piketon is a critical asset to the national defense, having played a pivotal role since the Cold War. He added that Centrus’s facility is currently the only one capable of large scale domestic enrichment operations, positioning Ohio at the forefront of uranium production in the United States.

Strengthening America's Energy Security

The urgency to enhance domestic energy capacities cannot be understated, particularly given that nearly 100% of the global enrichment capability is held by foreign, state-owned companies. Centrus is unique in that it uses American-made technology to manufacture its enrichment equipment entirely in the U.S. Should federal funding materialize, all resources allocated will reinvest back into American soil, focusing on local manufacturing rather than outsourcing.

In Senator Jon Husted's words, the expansion signifies a crucial step for both the local workforce and national imperatives. He stated, "Expanding our ability to enrich uranium here in Ohio will continue America's legacy as the global leader in nuclear development." The project is anticipated to energize local economies not just in Piketon but throughout Ohio's manufacturing supply chain, extending support to a centrifuge manufacturing facility in Tennessee.

Looking Ahead

As America continues to pivot towards nuclear energy as a clean and reliable power source, Centrus stands out as a vital contributor to the landscape. The advanced capabilities seen at the Piketon facility are key to meeting the demands of modern modular reactors, ensuring millions of homes have the power they need.

Centrus's investment will also see its centrifuges manufactured in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, and will then be delivered to Piketon for final assembly and operation. With such comprehensive planning and strategic partnerships in place, the project is poised not only to change the employment landscape in southern Ohio but also to mark a significant milestone in American energy independence.

Centrus Energy's expansion signifies much more than just job creation; it denotes a commitment to harnessing domestic resources for a sustainable energy future, reinforcing national security and creating opportunities in the rapidly evolving energy sector.

In summary, as the company ramps up efforts to hire and upgrade its facility, positive economic impacts are expected across multiple states, showcasing the importance of this industrial expansion project for the U.S. economy at large.
