Merus Power Launches Groundbreaking Grid-Forming Battery Storage System in the Nordics
Important Launch by Merus Power: The First Grid-Forming Battery Storage System in the Nordics
In a significant milestone, Merus Power has successfully launched the first grid-forming battery energy storage system (BESS) in the Nordic countries for its Swiss customer Alpiq. The energy storage system, rated at 30 MW and 36 MWh, was officially commissioned in Valkeakoski, Finland. This innovative solution meets the stringent requirements set by Fingrid, the Finnish Transmission System Operator, for large-scale grid-forming energy storage systems. The capabilities of this technology have been validated and approved by Fingrid through a series of simulations and rigorous field tests.
Grid-forming BESS solutions are designed to support the power grid independently during disturbances and failure situations. Merus Power's energy storage strengthens grid stability and facilitates the smooth integration of renewable energy sources into the electricity system.
A Revolutionary Technique
Unlike traditional grid-following power electronics solutions, the grid-forming battery storage system (BESS) provided by Merus Power can autonomously maintain voltage and frequency, enhancing grid stiffness and providing support during electricity system disturbances. This capability enables the restoration of the grid following a complete blackout and positions energy storage as a vital enabler of grid stability.
The concept of grid-forming means that an energy storage system or another power source does not simply follow an existing grid but can self-establish and maintain grid voltage and frequency. This is essential for acting as a foundation for grid stability even during failure conditions. Devices that operate with traditional grid-following control, such as wind turbines, require sufficient grid-forming capacity to operate reliably. Hence, grid-forming energy storage systems play a critical role in allowing continued growth in renewable electricity production.
Historically, this project is significant as Fingrid published its initial requirements for grid-forming functionality in D- and C-type energy storage systems only in the summer of 2023. Merus Power managed to develop and commercialize the technology in just two years. The facility underwent a verification process that included extensive modeling requirements and demanding field tests, demonstrating its reliability and ability to enhance grid stability.
Comments from Leadership
"We are proud to have brought into operation the first grid-forming battery storage system in the Nordics. This achievement showcases the high competence in Finnish product development and our ability to swiftly and reliably meet the new demands of the green transition. Supply security and cybersecurity are also central values in our operations, as energy storage systems are part of critical infrastructure. This project bolsters our position as a significant European energy storage supplier and supports our strategic goal of constructing a more sustainable and secure energy system," said Kari Tuomala, CEO of Merus Power.
Asta Sihvonen-Punkka, CEO of Fingrid Oy, remarked, "This first grid-forming energy storage system developed in the Nordics is an important step towards an even cleaner and more flexible electricity system. It is fantastic to see new technical solutions like this being introduced into the electricity grid to ensure operational reliability and enable an increased share of renewable energy in the grid. Fingrid collaborates closely with technology developers and looks forward to the future."
Project Overview
In this project, Merus Power acted as a developer, supplier, and EPC contractor (Engineering, Procurement, and Construction), managing the entire process from permits and construction to manufacturing, delivery, and commissioning. The energy storage system from Merus Power is based on in-house developed and manufactured technology. A strong focus on grid-forming development enhances our solutions even further, affirming our leadership in technology.
This project, commissioned by the Swiss utility company Alpiq, is also their first grid-forming energy storage system. It strengthens Alpiq's position as a provider of flexible energy solutions in the European electricity market and supports the growth of renewable energy.
Lukas Gresnigt, head of International and a member of Alpiq's executive board, commented, "This first grid-forming energy storage system is a significant milestone for us and an excellent example of how collaboration and innovation can accelerate the green transition. At Alpiq, we are proud to contribute our expertise in flexible solutions that support a cleaner energy future. Despite a demanding product development process, the system was delivered ahead of schedule - a remarkable achievement by Merus Power, reflecting the strong commitment of all involved."
Addressing Critical Infrastructure Needs
Merus Power's battery storage ensures high supply security even in global crisis situations, as the company operates in Europe, and all manufacturing occurs in Finland. Cybersecurity is also an integral part of each solution, as energy storage systems constitute part of critical infrastructure. All power electronics and grid connection software are developed entirely in-house by Merus Power.
Merus Power is recognized today as one of the leading suppliers of energy storage in the Nordics. This project is not just a commercial success but a step towards a new era of energy storage—demonstrating how BESS technology can enhance grid stability and supply security while enabling greater integration of renewable energy.
