California Community Foundation's New Fund Aims to Assist Families Affected by Immigration Raids

California Community Foundation's Initiative

On June 18, 2025, the California Community Foundation (CCF) announced the establishment of a new fund aimed at providing essential support for nonprofit organizations within Los Angeles County. This initiative comes in response to what has been described as a “humanitarian crisis” stemming from immigration raids that have significantly impacted local communities. President and CEO Miguel A. Santana emphasized that this fund is created to address the aftermath of these raids, focusing on the individuals and families who have lost loved ones and suffered economically due to the enforcement actions.

Responding to Community Distress

In light of the distress caused by the immigration raids, CCF's fund seeks to provide financial assistance to community organizations that are on the front lines of this crisis. The foundation compares its current efforts to previous responses during significant events such as the pandemic and devastating wildfires. Santana noted that when neighborhoods are paralyzed by fear, they risk becoming “ghost towns,” which contributes to a cycle of despair affecting everyday lives.

The YMCA of Metropolitan Los Angeles has reported a surge in requests for their food delivery service, designed for families unable to leave their homes. Recent weeks have seen an influx of volunteers eager to donate food items, which are compiled into care packages. Victor Dominguez, President and CEO of the YMCA, stated, “Every child and family should feel safe and supported.” In recognition of the growing need for food security and mental health services, their organization is adapting to the evolving demands of the community.

The Broader Impact on Families and Businesses

The immigration raids not only disrupt families directly affected but also have a ripple effect on their broader community dynamics. Many residents are opting to remain indoors, avoiding public spaces to evade potential detention. This hesitation complicates essential daily tasks such as grocery shopping, attending medical appointments, and even taking children to school. Consequently, families that rely on a primary income earner can face severe financial hardship if that individual is detained or too fearful to work. Small businesses, too, suffer as customers stay home due to fear.

Rudy Espinoza, CEO of Inclusive Action for the City, highlighted the organization's efforts to provide cash assistance to families of street vendors impacted by the raids. He pointed out that the need for financial relief echoes previous crises managed by the group, such as during wildfires. Beyond direct assistance, local shops dependent on patronage from these vendors are also feeling the consequences, facing declining sales that threaten their sustainability.

Grant Initiatives to Scale Up Support

The L.A. Neighbors Support Fund intends to extend grants to organizations that actively assist communities facing these challenges. Various community organizations have stepped up, personally delivering groceries to families with detained members and providing much-needed cash support. However, the sheer volume of need in the community often surpasses the available funds and manpower, emphasizing the importance of adequate resources for these grassroots organizations.

Espinoza noted the increasing pressure on these groups: “Organizations on the front lines need to be resourced for this work. They are the first responders.” Ideally, he expresses, such work should not be necessary.

Organizations like SCOPE, which focus on economic justice, are tackling the crisis by delivering food to families using personal vehicles, often with limited supplies. Executive Director Gloria Medina shared her goal of expanding their reach—more funding could allow them to double their outreach and provide essential items such as diapers alongside food.

“The healing begins with each wellness visit and every bag of groceries we deliver,” Medina reinforced, presenting a poignant reminder of the ongoing human impact of these challenges.

Conclusion

As the California Community Foundation continues its commitment to alleviating the impacts of these immigration raids, it calls for a collective response from Angelenos to support those in distress. The hope is that through community efforts, individuals can reclaim their sense of safety and stability amidst this ongoing crisis.
