Cabana Collaborates with VA to Enhance Veteran Support through Community-Based Initiatives

Cabana and VA Join Forces for Veteran Support

In an innovative step forward, Cabana, a modern mental health provider, has teamed up with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to launch a pilot program aimed at enhancing mental health support for veterans through community-based resources. This initiative positions Cabana at the forefront of VA’s suicide prevention efforts by bridging traditional healthcare with technology-driven peer support.

Pilot Program Overview

On May 15, 2025, it was announced that the VA awarded Cabana a one-year pilot contract, including an option to extend for another year. This contract allows Cabana to develop a community-focused suicide prevention initiative in collaboration with Upstate Warrior Solution and Veterans Bridge Home, organizations operating in North and South Carolina. By integrating these strong community partners, the program aims to reach veterans who may not actively seek assistance through conventional healthcare.

The pilot leverages two significant investments made by the VA: Cabana’s position as a Mission Daybreak awardee and the roles of Upstate Warrior Solution and Veterans Bridge Home as recipients of the SSG Fox Suicide Prevention Grant. Together, they aim to utilize technology and peer support to expand outreach and provide vital resources to veterans in need.

Innovative Approach to Mental Health

Dr. Nick Armstrong, Cabana’s Head of Public Sector, stated, "This effort represents a pioneering approach to align VA's innovation with community-based priorities in suicide prevention. We are experimenting with methods to engage veterans earlier by connecting them with trusted local partners and enabling supportive peer interactions."

Participants in the program will have access to Cabana's anonymous support groups where privacy is prioritized. Individuals can maintain their anonymity by using aliases, and video features will be disabled to create a safe environment for discussions. Additionally, voice masking options are available to further ensure confidentiality. Chris Morris, a retired U.S. Army Green Beret Lieutenant Colonel, is leading the day-to-day management of the initiative, emphasizing the importance of small, meaningful conversations that can lead to significant changes in veterans' lives.

Launch and Future Plans

The initiative is set to kick off in Upstate South Carolina and Greater Charlotte, North Carolina, within the month. If successful, the pilot will expand in its second year to include three additional communities involved in the SSG Fox grantee program. This growth would enhance the program's capacity to serve a larger veteran population, demonstrating the scalability of the approach and the importance of community engagement in addressing mental health challenges.

Cabana's Commitment to Mental Health

Cabana’s mission revolves around making mental health resources more accessible through technology and meaningful connections. The organization's commitment to serving diverse communities is at the core of its operations, offering professionally moderated group sessions and an array of wellness tools. By blending advanced technology with empathetic peer support, Cabana aims to create an environment where individuals feel supported in managing their mental health challenges.
