Shinhan Asset Management Collaborates with Plume for Tokenized Securities Initiative
Shinhan Asset Management and Plume Network Join Forces
In a significant step towards the modernization of financial services, Shinhan Asset Management has officially signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Plume, a prominent Open Finance platform. This partnership is aimed at pioneering the development of a KRW-denominated tokenized fund, representing a major advancement in the integration of traditional finance with blockchain technology.
The primary objective of this collaboration is to create a proof of concept (POC) that will demonstrate how Korean Won (KRW) assets can be utilized in a dollar-centric on-chain funding ecosystem. This initiative not only strives to showcase the potential for offshore demand for KRW but also marks a crucial step in applying institutional-grade standards for South Korean assets, bridging a gap previously unexplored in this realm.
Lee Seok-won, CEO of Shinhan Asset Management, emphasized the importance of this initiative, stating, "While dollar-based assets have traditionally served as an on-chain payment and liquidity infrastructure, it is now time to bring overseas funds into the domestic market through Korean Won-based stablecoins or tokenized securities." To achieve this, he acknowledged the necessity of conducting comprehensive experiments regarding whitelisting methods, and the functionality of KYC (Know Your Customer) and AML (Anti-Money Laundering), which are essential for regulatory compliance in global markets.
This pioneering POC will specifically utilize ultra-short-term bonds denominated in KRW as the underlying asset. With the cooperation of Plume, technical challenges associated with the incorporation of tokenization functions in offshore markets will be assessed. Both organizations aim to ensure that regulatory principles are seamlessly integrated into the process. This includes establishing whitelisted transfer controls, on-chain mechanisms, along with compliant KYC and AML systems necessary for the global financial environment.
Despite the promising scope of this collaboration, it is important to note that the POC will be conducted within a controlled framework, distinctly isolating the process from the domestic market to prevent access by local residents. This structure aims to mitigate risks and maintain compliance while Shinhan Asset Management engages with regulatory bodies to ensure responsible operation throughout the project.
As part of the agreement, Plume brings to the table its established infrastructure and regulatory experience, holding a Transfer Agent license registered with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). This further strengthens the foundation for their collaboration as they seek to set industry standards for tokenization services. Chris Yin, CEO and co-founder of Plume, remarked on the critical nature of this partnership, noting, "There is now a significant demand for global market integration," highlighting the necessity of connecting compliant, high-quality KRW-denominated assets to a worldwide investor audience.
This MOU, however, is strictly limited to the proof of concept stage, focusing solely on technical validation and the preparation of a solid infrastructure for the impending rollout of a domestic token securities system. The long-term vision involves expanding the initiative to include not just technical validation but also the potential for wider domestic and international issuance and distribution, contingent on adherence to relevant laws and regulatory frameworks.
