South University Launches Expanded High Point Campus with Ribbon Cutting Celebration
South University Celebrates Expansion of High Point Campus
On April 8, 2026, South University (SU) proudly marked a significant step forward with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at its High Point campus, located at 4050 Premier Drive. This event highlighted the grand opening of an expanded and renovated facility, which serves as a testament to the university's commitment to enhancing healthcare education and workforce development in the Piedmont Triad region of North Carolina.
The ceremony welcomed a host of university leaders and community partners, where attendees engaged in guided tours of the new academic spaces. The expansive facilities, covering over 13,000 square feet, now include two new clinical skills labs, nursing simulation labs, clinical examination rooms, wellness areas, student lounges, and additional learning spaces. Light refreshments were served, providing an excellent opportunity for attendees to network with faculty and staff while celebrating the campus's growth.
High Point Mayor Cyril Jefferson expressed his pride in the university’s impact on the community. He stated, "I'm proud to celebrate South University's new campus and the expansion of opportunities it brings, right here in our city. Education isn't a handout – it's a hand up – and when we open doors, our students walk through them and go on to transform the world in ways we can't yet imagine. This investment shows our confidence in the future, and we stand ready to partner in this work to create opportunity, strengthen healthcare, and help more people achieve the American dream."
The High Point campus has moved to 4050 Premier Drive from its previous location along the same road to better accommodate its growing academic programs. The new facilities feature state-of-the-art nursing training environments, positioned to enhance students' hands-on learning experiences.
Devin Byrd, Campus Director and Dean of Academic Affairs and Operations at South University in High Point, shared, "This new space reflects our commitment to providing students in the Piedmont Triad access to the hands-on training and personalized support they need to launch meaningful healthcare careers. We fully expect this space to provide an enriching environment that will allow students, faculty, and our community members to engage in collaboration that will foster growth opportunities."
South University's High Point campus is dedicated to offering a select range of healthcare and nursing degrees, including a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) and an Associate of Science in Allied Health Science. The campus caters to students who are balancing work, education, and life, ensuring a personalized and supportive learning environment characterized by small class sizes and direct faculty engagement.
This investment is timely, considering the growing demand for healthcare professionals in North Carolina. Estimates suggest that the state will need approximately 17,500 additional nurses within the next decade to keep pace with its aging and expanding population, with the Triad region expected to be particularly affected. SU's healthcare programs are strategically designed to fill this gap, equipping graduates to step into high-demand roles in hospitals, clinics, and healthcare systems throughout the area.
Julie Hill, Chief of Staff at Business High Point, reinforced the significance of the new campus, stating, "Every great community is built on strong pillars, a vibrant faith community, a thriving business community, dedicated nonprofits, accessible healthcare, and quality education. South University uniquely bridges many of these pillars, strengthening the very foundation that makes High Point a great place to live, work, and grow."
The university has established partnerships with various healthcare providers across the Piedmont Triad to facilitate clinical placements for students, amplifying their opportunities for hands-on experience. Collaborations with institutions like Novant Health, Moses Cone, and Gateway are set to create pathways for graduates into essential healthcare positions.
Benjamin J. DeGweck, CEO and Chancellor of South University, concluded by emphasizing the university's mission: "Our High Point campus is a testament to South University's mission to serve with purpose and lead with impact. The Piedmont Triad needs more healthcare professionals, and we're putting resources behind that need—investing in facilities, faculty, and a student-centered experience that prepares graduates to make a real difference in their communities."
Founded in 1899, South University has grown remarkably, now serving over 10,000 students across 11 campuses and an online curriculum, offering a variety of programs that range from associate to doctoral degrees. Its focus remains on critical fields like healthcare, business, and technology, ensuring that students receive quality education and training to succeed in their respective careers.
As the High Point campus embarks on this new chapter, it stands ready to significantly contribute to the local community and help meet the pressing healthcare needs of the region.
