Unlock Your Secret Message at The Watergate Hotel
The Watergate Hotel, a prominent landmark in Washington, D.C., is set to celebrate a significant milestone on June 17, marking the 54th anniversary of the break-in that forever altered American politics. The hotel's event, titled
'Unlock Your Secret Message,' is designed to engage the public with a unique, immersive activation that nods to the history surrounding the infamous incident.
From 4 to 6 p.m., visitors will be treated to a thematic installation in the hotel lobby that reflects the atmosphere of a 1970s newsroom. This space will boast vintage equipment—think typewriters and rotary phones—immersing attendees in the aesthetic of the era. During this time, guests will have the opportunity to select a word from the list of terms connected to the Watergate saga, such as
'secret,' 'investigate,' and
'scandal.' Following their selection, a poet will assist them in crafting an original poem, which will be sealed in a
'Top Secret' envelope, serving as a memorable keepsake.
In addition to this interactive experience, Kingbird restaurant will offer limited-edition cocktails inspired by the occasion, including
The Smoking Gun, a smoked bourbon cocktail designed to tantalize guests' palates while echoing the evening's theme.
Daniel Pimentel, the Managing Director at The Watergate Hotel, explains the intention behind this unique activation:
“Those who operated out of this building spent two years trying to keep words off the record. This event invites guests to become part of that conversation through creativity, self-expression, and storytelling.”
The event aims not just to educate but also to create a space where guests can reflect on a time when words held immense power—power that was fiercely contested in political arenas. The Watergate Hotel itself has been synonymous with this narrative, thriving amidst the controversies that defined a generation.
The hotel will also feature historical nods throughout the experience, including a listed phone number reflecting the date of the break-in and room keys that cleverly state,
'No Need to Break In.' Such elements serve as subtle reminders of the hotel’s pivotal place in the fabric of American history.
Located at 2650 Virginia Ave. NW, The Watergate Hotel is more than just a mere witness to past events; it stands as a symbol of style and sophistication in the heart of D.C. This luxury destination combines mid-century modern design with contemporary aesthetics, featuring notable works by renowned designers like Ron Arad and Italian brand Moroso.
