Cosmo Oil Marketing Selected for Tokyo’s Domestic SAF Initiative
Cosmo Oil Marketing Co., a subsidiary of Cosmo Energy Holdings, has made headlines by being selected for Tokyo's urgent measures to promote domestic Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). This project is a strategic response to the rising prices of conventional aviation fuels, largely driven by the ongoing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East.
The Tokyo Metropolitan Government is implementing this initiative to bridge the price gap between traditional and sustainable aviation fuels. The rise in prices has raised concerns about the decreasing demand for SAF, which is essential for achieving long-term environmental goals. Cosmo Oil’s participation in this project follows its previous acceptance into Tokyo's 2026 Domestic SAF Utilization Promotion Project, underscoring the company's commitment to sustainable aviation.
The SAF targeted in this initiative is a product of a significant project started in 2021, supported by the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO). Cosmo Oil Marketing, alongside its partners, is pioneering the commercial-scale production of domestically produced SAF in Japan, making this a landmark achievement in the industry's transition towards sustainability.
This innovative fuel has already obtained crucial international sustainability certifications, including the ISCC CORSIA and ISCC EU certifications, ensuring its environmental credentials. The production is managed by a joint venture known as SAFFAIRE SKY ENERGY, which consists of Cosmo Oil, JGC Holdings, and Revo International. Starting in 2025, this SAF will be supplied to airlines operating at Haneda Airport, further enhancing its market availability.
The Cosmo Energy Group has long been committed to the vision of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050. This initiative is a part of their broader strategy to establish a complete supply chain for domestic SAF. Additionally, in a bid to facilitate the collection of used cooking oil for SAF production, the company is continuously running collection programs at service stations.
Through such initiatives, Cosmo aims not only to contribute to the reduction of carbon emissions but also to foster a circular economy. The ongoing efforts in promoting SAF utilization in air transport reflect Cosmo Energy’s dedication to addressing societal challenges and supporting sustainable development.
Going forward, the company plans to continue promoting SAF use as a pivotal aspect of its operations, recognizing it as essential for resource circulation and a sustainable society. By overcoming challenges related to decarbonization and embracing a circular economic model, Cosmo Energy aspires to make a significant impact on both industry and society.
This acceptance into Tokyo's Domestic SAF Initiative is a crucial leap towards a greener future, and the company is optimistic about expanding the application of domestically produced SAF across Japan.
In conclusion, as we move towards a more sustainable aviation sector, Cosmo Oil Marketing's proactive measures and commitment to SAF supply pave the way for a potential transformation in how the industry approaches fuel production, aiming for a smaller carbon footprint and a healthier planet.
