CVC DIF Acquires Majority Share in Firstcolo to Advance Data Centre Developments in Germany

CVC DIF Takes Steps to Enhance Firstcolo's Data Centre Platform

In a strategic move to expand its portfolio in the digital infrastructure sector, CVC DIF, the infrastructure arm of the globally recognized private equity firm CVC, has finalized an agreement to acquire a significant majority stake in firstcolo GmbH. This acquisition not only marks a pivotal moment for firstcolo but also signals CVC DIF's commitment to developing high-performance data centre infrastructures in Germany. The transaction is set to conclude by the end of September 2026, pending customary regulatory approvals.

Overview of Firstcolo and its Infrastructure

Founded in 2007, firstcolo has established itself as a key player in the Frankfurt metropolitan area, serving over 350 customers through its two operational data centres. The company focuses on delivering comprehensive solutions, including colocation, dedicated hardware, cloud services, connectivity, and managed IT services. Known for its reliable and certified infrastructure, firstcolo has garnered a reputation for exceptional customer service, offering clients direct access to technical assistance.

The FRA7 Project: A Significant Leap Forward

Central to this new partnership is the ambitious FRA7 data centre project, located in Rosbach vor der Höhe. Designed as an AI-ready facility, FRA7 aims to sustain a total capacity of 24 MW and an IT load of 16 MW. It will feature advanced liquid cooling solutions, which allow for a robust setup of high-density racks capable of supporting up to 200 kW per rack. The integration of cutting-edge cooling technologies is expected to meet the surging demands of artificial intelligence and high-performance computing workloads.

CVC DIF's backing provides a sturdy foundation for firstcolo to elevate its infrastructure capabilities. Future developments foresee a focus on energy-efficient practices, targeting a Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) below 1.2. Moreover, firstcolo has secured a partnership with OVAG, a regional energy provider, ensuring a sustainable energy supply while also repurposing waste heat from the data centre to local heating systems.

Continuity in Leadership

Firstcolo’s founding team remains committed to steering the company into this new chapter. CEO Jerome Evans and COO Nicolaj Kamensek, alongside CFO Dennis Bergfeld, will continue in their leadership roles. Their enduring involvement illustrates firstcolo’s dedication to maintaining its foundational values of technical excellence and operational reliability. Evans remarked, “Our partnership with CVC DIF is a significant testament to the progress we’ve made as a team. With CVC DIF's support, we can further our ambition of becoming a leading colocation provider in Germany.”

CVC DIF's Perspective on the Acquisition

Representatives from CVC DIF have expressed their enthusiasm regarding the acquisition, emphasizing firstcolo’s strong market position in a supply-constrained environment. Managing Partner Willem Jansonius noted, “firstcolo presents a unique opportunity to invest in a high-quality, founder-led colocation platform. We are eager to collaborate with the firstcolo team to further develop their exceptional service offerings for enterprise clients.”

The Future of Firstcolo

As firstcolo embarks on this new phase of growth, the company is poised to broaden its market reach while capitalizing on regional demand for sustainable and high-performance data solutions. The emphasis on advanced technologies and energy-efficient practices positions firstcolo to cater to the evolving needs of customers across various sectors, including those focused on artificial intelligence and high-performance computing. With continued growth in mind, firstcolo aims to set the benchmark for what modern data centres should offer, aligning with the increasing demand in a digital-first world.

This acquisition by CVC DIF exemplifies the shift toward investing in sustainable digital solutions that facilitate continual operations while striving for energy efficiency. As firstcolo looks toward the future, it is well-equipped to evolve and thrive within the competitive data centre landscape.
