China Medical University Hospital Attains Stage 7 in AMAM Certification, Pioneering AI-Driven Healthcare in Asia

China Medical University Hospital Achieves a Major Milestone in Healthcare

China Medical University Hospital (CMUH), located in Taichung, Taiwan, has marked a significant achievement by becoming the first hospital in Taiwan and the second in the Asia-Pacific region to receive the prestigious Stage 7 certification from the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) under the Analytics Maturity Adoption Model (AMAM). This classification underscores CMUH's dedication to harnessing artificial intelligence (AI) and big data analytics in providing exceptional medical services.

Significance of AMAM Stage 7 Certification

The AMAM Stage 7 certification is recognized globally as the pinnacle of excellence in medical data analytics. It demonstrates that a medical institution has significantly integrated sophisticated AI technologies and analytics in its operations, enhancing both patient care and hospital management. CMUH Superintendent, Dr. Der-Yang Cho, spoke about this achievement, expressing pride in how the certification reflects the successful melding of AI with clinical decision-making processes.

The advancements made possible by this integration can be witnessed in various aspects of patient care, from diagnostics to treatment efficiency. As a result, CMUH has been able to enhance the safety, speed, and personalization of healthcare services.

Innovations and Their Impact

One of the cornerstone innovations at CMUH is the implementation of AI-driven critical care management systems, such as the HiThings Tele-ICU. This system uses AIoT technology alongside specific tools like the Intelligent Antimicrobial System (i.A.M.S) and Smart Lung Protection (ARDiTeX). With these technologies, the hospital can identify patients at risk for severe conditions, allowing for tailored treatments that have effectively reduced ICU mortality rates by 5.4%.

Moreover, the AI-Driven Metabolism analysis tool allows for the evaluation of a patient’s genetic data. This capability enables medical professionals to predict adverse reactions to medications, leading to personalized drug recommendations that enhance treatment safety and effectiveness.

Advancing Surgical Care with AI

CMUH has also made strides in surgical care through its Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) program, which automates procedures from preoperative assessments to postoperative monitoring. This initiative has reduced average hospital stays by 23%, facilitating quicker recovery for patients while improving operational efficiency.

A highlight of the hospital’s technological advancement is the “MAGI” AI Medical Records Assistant. This tool streamlines the documentation process by transforming verbal notes into structured patient records. By minimizing documentation time by an astounding 85%, healthcare professionals can dedicate more attention to patient-centered care.

Smart Hospital Management and Sustainability Efforts

CMUH's innovations extend beyond direct patient care into smart hospital management. AI systems for diagnosis coding and cost prediction, referred to as AI-ICD and AI-DRG, have greatly optimized resource allocation without compromising care quality. The hospital's intelligent supply chain management system projects medical supply usage accurately, leading to a 20.2% decrease in inventory costs.

Moreover, predictive AI maintenance for medical equipment has contributed to environmental sustainability, reducing carbon emissions by 518 kg annually.

Leading the Future with Smart Healthcare 4.0

Since 2016, CMUH has been at the forefront of the digital healthcare transformation, establishing an AI Center, Digital Transformation Office, and a Big Data Center. Previously, the hospital set benchmarks by earning HIMSS INFRAM and EMRAM Stage 7 certifications, and in 2023, it became the first in Taiwan to renew these accolades and was honored with the HIMSS Davies Award of Excellence.

According to Dr. Cho, CMUH's journey doesn’t stop here. With the AMAM Stage 7 certification under its belt, it aims to continue expanding its AI applications to reinforce Taiwan's position as an international leader in Smart Healthcare 4.0. This commitment guarantees that CMUH remains a trailblazer in setting new standards for smart hospitals worldwide.
