HIS Shines at the 4th JATA SDGs Awards
HIS (H.I.S. Co., Ltd.), headquartered in Shinjuku, Tokyo, has recently been recognized at the 4th JATA SDGs Awards, organized by the Japan Association of Travel Agents (JATA). This prestigious event focuses on promoting the sustainable development goals (SDGs) within the travel industry. This year, HIS secured two awards for their engaging projects aimed at social responsibility and environmental preservation.
Award-Winning Projects
Outstanding Award in Social and Economic Category
Under the social and economic category, HIS was honored with the
Outstanding Award for its remarkable initiative known as the "Flying Wheelchair" project. This project revolves around the repair and maintenance of wheelchairs that are no longer needed in Japan, which are then transported to overseas facilities in need. Participants of HIS tours get the unique opportunity to donate these wheelchairs during their travels.
For a unique travel experience, tour participants engage in a hands-on donation process. Specifically, they work with Japanese vocational school students who repair the wheelchairs, allowing travelers to contribute directly by bringing these chairs to institutions that cater to people with disabilities or orphanages. To date, HIS has organized ten tours to Vietnam and Nepal, successfully donating a total of fifteen wheelchairs. In the upcoming summer, the plan involves donating two more refurbished wheelchairs each to both Vietnam and Nepal.

Special Award in Environmental Category
HIS also received a
Special Award in the environmental category for the
LeaLea Charity Run 5K, which beautifully merges tourism with environmental conservation. Launched in 2011 to support recovery efforts following the Great East Japan Earthquake, this event has evolved into a local fixture in Hawaii, aimed at supporting the community.
Since 2014, the charity run has included activities such as beach cleaning post-race, and all proceeds from the event are donated to the Waikiki Aquarium, which is dedicated to research and preservation efforts for Hawaii's coral reefs and marine ecosystems.
