Parents Nationwide Call for Enhanced Online Safeguards in Meta Agreement

Safety Features Desirable to Parents

Glen Weiner, the executive director of CEF, stated, "Parents want practical tools that help them protect their kids online. This agreement is an important step forward, but these safeguards should not stop with one platform. Every app and platform where young people spend time should implement similar protections.”

Parents voiced several key areas of concern during the focus group discussions, including clear screen-time limits, protective measures during school hours and at night, and enhanced control over algorithmic feeds. One participant, Amber B., shared her thoughts on the impact of screen time on her son. "I think that there's a big difference when [my son is] on [social media] for two hours or less versus when he's on it for three or four hours at night. I love that they’re actually making timeframes where they can’t use it at night and block it during school hours... I feel like it's what parents want to see."

Amir R. added his perspective on the desirability of having the option to manage algorithm-based feeds: "If I have to put this in order, the top one I would choose is the ability to turn off the algorithm-based [feed], because those formulas target users based on their preferences, and sometimes they’re actually getting fed what they don’t like.” Amber B. further asserted, "I think it'll help kids self-regulate a little bit better if they are on their phones for less time."

The Call for Broader Action

The feedback reflects a broader consensus amongst parents nationally, echoing calls for systemic changes in online safety protocols. John S., another participant, urged, "I think every platform should adopt something similar.” He emphasized not only the necessity of safety features but also the potential for such measures to become codified into national law, stating, "Codify into national law what they need to do to protect children.”

The call for legislative action was echoed by Jessica N., who emphasized that protecting children should be a primary focus, advocating, “I think it should be their number one priority to make it a law to protect these kids.”
