Sun Life U.S. Introduces Family Leave Insurance in Michigan and West Virginia

Sun Life U.S. Expands Family Leave Insurance

In a significant move to promote healthier work-life balance for employees, Sun Life U.S. has announced the expansion of its Family Leave Insurance (FLI) program to include the states of Michigan and West Virginia. This initiative not only enhances support for working families but also positions employers to provide essential benefits that align with contemporary workplace demands.

The Family Leave Insurance program is designed to give employees access to paid family leave, which is crucial for parents seeking to bond with their newborns or for individuals needing to care for family members. Traditionally, employees in these situations have relied on unpaid leave, which often places them in a difficult financial position. FLI seeks to alleviate this burden by offering comparable income replacement that allows families the time they need without the stress of financial strain.

Sun Life has long been a proponent of paid leave and has engaged with state legislatures across the country to ensure the viability of such programs. Its dedication to this cause is further underscored by their advocacy for the permanent federal paid leave tax credit for employers, introduced in recent tax legislation. The alignment of FLI with this tax incentive underscores Sun Life's commitment to addressing the evolving needs of the workforce and the companies that employ them.

Sheila Sokolski, Vice President of Product Strategy and Portfolio Management at Sun Life U.S., stated, “We believe no one should have to choose between their job and caring for a loved one. While the Family and Medical Leave Act provides unpaid leave for up to 12 weeks, it forces many employees to decide whether they can afford to take time off to care for their families.” With FLI, employers can offer equitable paid family leave benefits to all employees, ensuring a more compassionate approach to family responsibilities.

The introduction of FLI fills critical gaps for many employers in states that do not have government-mandated leave programs. Moreover, it is accessible to eligible employees across state lines, thereby enhancing its appeal for businesses with diverse workforces. Importantly, FLI is available as fully insured coverage, allowing small and mid-sized businesses to provide this benefit without the risks associated with self-funding.

Employers stand to gain a competitive edge in the labor market by offering this benefit. Particularly, companies that operate across state lines or employ remote workers can use FLI as a powerful tool for recruitment and retention. Currently, Sun Life offers FLI in 14 additional states, including Alabama, Texas, and Florida, and is set to begin quoting in Massachusetts shortly.

In addition to improving employee satisfaction and retention, Sun Life has designed its FLI program to support overall workforce health and productivity. Employees can submit their claims online, and employers are equipped with tools to track leave details effectively.

As of August 1, employees in Michigan, West Virginia, and Massachusetts can take advantage of this benefit. Sun Life anticipates further approvals for additional states in 2025, reflecting a growing trend towards embracing policies that prioritize health and family.

The importance of offering comprehensive benefit packages cannot be understated in our increasingly competitive job market. By leveraging such programs, employers can not only contribute positively to their employees' well-being but also better navigate the complexities of workforce management in a post-pandemic landscape.
