First Ever 3x3 Basketball Challenge in Toyama
On July 11, 2026, the vibrant city of Toyama hosted an exciting event aimed at young sports enthusiasts: the inaugural
3x3 Basketball Challenge. This initiative, organized by JPF Corporation under the guidance of the city, serves to promote urban sports and provide a platform for children to learn and grow through basketball.
The event drew the participation of 14 young athletes: nine elementary school students, four middle schoolers, and one high school student. Under the expert guidance of
Shuto Matsuyama, a professional 3x3 basketball player affiliated with JPF, the participants engaged in a series of skill-building exercises including warm-ups, ball handling, one-on-one drills, and competitive 3x3 matches.
Kicking Off with Fun and Learning
The day began with an engaging game of tag that incorporated basketball skills. This playful activity helped participants loosen up while practicing essential ball handling techniques. They learned not just the basics of dribbling but also advanced skills such as controlling the ball with their fingertips and spinning it around their bodies. Matsuyama provided personalized feedback, ensuring each child received tailored advice based on their performance.
In the subsequent one-on-one session, the participants applied their newly acquired skills against each other. The diversity in age and experience levels created a dynamic learning environment, where younger athletes could challenge themselves while older participants shared their insights. Many noted that receiving direct advice from a professional player was a highlight, enhancing their understanding of the game.
Experiencing the Thrill of 3x3 Games
As the afternoon progressed, excitement surged during the 3x3 matches, where teams were formed spontaneously. Players utilized the skills they practiced in a more competitive setting, leading to a thrilling display of teamwork and sportsmanship. Feedback from participants was overwhelmingly positive, with many declaring the 3x3 matches to be the most enjoyable part of the event. Comments like, “I was thrilled to score points in a game!” and “I learned skills that will stay with me,” mirrored their enthusiasm and satisfaction.
After the structured program, a 30-minute free play session allowed kids to continue practicing on the 3x3 courts, fostering a love for the sport. Participants expressed appreciation for the detailed instruction they received, with many eager to return for future events.
