Saga City Launches Reuse Initiative with Market Enterprise



In June, during Environment Month, Saga City, led by Mayor Hidetaka Sakai, announced a new collaboration with Market Enterprise, headquartered in Chūō City, Tokyo. This partnership, which will launch on June 23, 2026, aims to tackle local community issues through a reuse business agreement that utilizes Market Enterprise's innovative reuse platform, Oikura. The primary goal of this initiative is to promote the reuse of unwanted items instead of trashing them, which is seen as pivotal for reducing waste and fostering a circular economy within Saga City.

Background and Motivation



Saga City has made significant strides toward achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), organizing eco-markets, facilitating the rental of reusable dishes, and reusing items collected at waste disposal facilities. However, the increasing number of senior citizens facing challenges when disposing of waste and the high incidence of reusable items being discarded as trash have been identified as critical issues. Consequently, city officials have been exploring new methods to raise awareness and encourage reuse activities among residents.
