World Cancer Day 2026: Join the Global Fight Against Cancer with UICC Japan

World Cancer Day 2026: A Day of Global Action

The International Union Against Cancer (UICC) Japan Committee is preparing for a significant event on February 4, 2026, in recognition of World Cancer Day. This day serves as an opportunity for individuals across the globe to raise awareness about cancer and take action against this devastating disease. This year, the UICC aims to connect numerous illuminated venues nationwide through an online lighting ceremony, promoting the message of solidarity and action.

Event Highlights

On the evening of February 4, from 5:30 PM to 6:15 PM JST, the lighting ceremony will occur, culminating in a major illumination at 6:00 PM. Participants can view the ceremony through the special World Cancer Day website via YouTube Live. The spirit of the event is encapsulated in the UICC's initiative, "Light up the world," where venues across Japan will be illuminated in UICC colors—blue and orange—symbolizing hope and unity.

The ceremony will feature notable guest appearances, including actress Natsuko Akiyano, who will lend her voice to this important cause. A message read by Sadaharu Oh, Chairman of the Fukuoka SoftBank Hawks, emphasizes the shared commitment to combat cancer and support those affected.

Participating Locations

The lighting will span across 16 facilities in Japan, illustrating a national effort against cancer. Some of the key sites include:
  • - Hiroo Santa Land Illumination (Hokkaido)
  • - Sendai Sky Candle (Miyagi)
  • - Tochigi Prefectural Office Showa Building (Tochigi)
  • - Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building (Tokyo)
  • - Hakata Port Tower (Fukuoka)

This widespread illumination not only shines a light on the fight against cancer but also fosters a sense of community and mutual support that transcends borders.

Live Sessions and On-Demand Content

Following the lighting ceremony, UICC Japan will host a live session at 6:45 PM, titled "Understanding Future Cancer Prevention and Treatment!" This session will be led by experts in the field, including prominent figures from the Japanese Society of Cancer Treatment. Together, they will delve into critical topics related to cancer prevention and the latest advancements in cancer care.

In addition to the live session, there will also be on-demand content available starting at 7:45 PM that allows viewers to engage with a rich array of discussions from affiliated member organizations.

What is World Cancer Day?

World Cancer Day, established by UICC, takes place every February 4, serving as a pivotal platform for cancer awareness and advocacy. It encourages individuals to act and engage in discussions about cancer prevention and care. Initially launched during the World Cancer Summit in Paris in 2000, the initiative has grown to include themes that resonate globally. For 2025 and 2026, the motto "United by Unique" calls everyone to reflect on personal contributions towards eliminating cancer.
