BagelFest West: A Culinary Celebration of Bagels in Los Angeles
Los Angeles recently witnessed the arrival of
BagelFest West, marking its debut with a spectacular sold-out event at the
Audrey Irmas Pavilion. Following the viral success of its New York counterpart, this festival embraced the culinary culture of the beloved bagel, showcasing a blend of traditional and innovative creations from top bakers, chefs, and food enthusiasts across the West Coast.
A Weekend to Remember
The event, held in collaboration with the
Jewish Food Lab of Wilshire Boulevard Temple, attracted over
1000 attendees from diverse sectors such as hospitality, media, and culinary arts. As participants indulged in unique bagel offerings and engaging activities, the festival cemented its status as a prime celebration of bagel culture.
Customary events kicked off with the
BagelFest West Inner Circle Industry Mixer, where industry leaders enjoyed a preview of Chef Eric Greenspan's
Mish Deli. This was just the beginning, as the main festival took place the following day, featuring a myriad of tastings, competitions, and educational panel discussions. Topics covered ranged from ingredient sourcing and fermentation techniques to the evolving identity of the Californian bagel. It was evident that while New York may have established the standards of bagel-making, Los Angeles is eager to create its own flavorful identity.
The Best Bagel Competitions
The heart of BagelFest West lay in its thrilling competitions. Participants showcased their skills across multiple categories, making for an exciting and spirited showdown. The judging panel, composed of culinary experts and industry veterans, evaluated entries based on critical criteria such as flavor, texture, artistry, and presentation. The specialized group, humorously known as the
"Breadheads", focused on the nuances that contribute to an exceptional bagel.
The results were electrifying. Among the winners,
John Park from
Rise Bagels, located in
Irvine, California, took home the coveted title of Best of the West. The festival recognized not just the physical attributes of bagels, but the passion and creativity behind every entry.
Celebrating Innovation and Community
The festival awarded multiple accolades across various categories:
- - Best Bagel: Hey Bagel from Seattle
- - Most Creative: A tie between Rise Bagel and Uncle Stevey's Bagels
- - Best Sandwich: Awarded to Belle's Bagels, Delicatessen and Bar for their Cherrywood Beet sandwich
Park stated, "Winning Best of the West is incredibly fulfilling. We dedicated a lot of time and effort this week, and I'm so proud of my team!
