Ushio Electric's Strategic Acquisition of ams-OSRAM's Lamp Business
Ushio Electric Co., Ltd., headquartered in Tokyo, has taken a significant step in its growth strategy by announcing the acquisition of ams-OSRAM AG's lamp business, primarily focused on semiconductor applications. This acquisition is a part of Ushio's efforts to reshape its business portfolio under its new growth strategy, "Revive Vision 2030." The agreement to transfer shares and assets was signed with ams-OSRAM on July 28, 2025.
The acquisition is expected to close in the fourth quarter of the fiscal year ending in March 2026. This move is projected to enhance Ushio's revenue base within the Industrial Process business, particularly in the semiconductor lighting sector, by improving efficiency and optimizing production processes.
Currently, the ams-OSRAM lamp segment generates sales of approximately 28.8 billion yen (for the fiscal year 2024) and consists of about 500 employees who will transition to the Ushio Group. As a global leader in semiconductor and specialized lighting technologies for automotive, industrial, and medical applications, ams-OSRAM designs, manufactures, and sells cutting-edge LED, laser, and sensor devices, alongside special lamps for semiconductor manufacturing equipment. The transfer will specifically include specialized lamps used in semiconductor manufacturing equipment.
Through this acquisition, Ushio aims to leverage the technological advantages, patents, and manufacturing know-how held by both companies to capture more sales opportunities in the semiconductor lamp market, which is poised for continued growth. Furthermore, the integration is expected to lead to significant enhancements in production efficiency, ultimately contributing to increased profitability.
Ushio's strategic acquisition of this stable revenue-generating business from ams-OSRAM aligns with its goal of achieving a return on equity (ROE) of over 12%, as stipulated in its "Revive Vision 2030" strategy. By fortifying its Intellectual Property (IP) business and enhancing its competitive strength, Ushio is positioning itself for further expansion and supporting the ongoing restructuring and efficiency improvements within the lighting industry.
