Sandy Springs, GA Partners with Northside Hospital for Community Cardiac Response Initiative

Sandy Springs, GA Launches Innovative Cardiac Emergency Program

In an exciting development for public health and safety, the City of Sandy Springs, Georgia, has announced a collaboration with Avive Solutions and Northside Hospital to implement the groundbreaking 4 Minute Community™ Program. This initiative aims to address the vital gap in emergency response times during incidents of Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA), a leading cause of death across the United States. Over 356,000 out-of-hospital cardiac arrests occur each year, with a staggering 90% resulting in fatalities. The program is designed to improve survival rates significantly through community engagement and advanced medical technology.

The Collaboration

The partnership involves multiple stakeholders, including the City of Sandy Springs, Northside Hospital Foundation, Northside Hospital Heart Institute, and the Sandy Springs Fire Department. By situating 200 Avive Connect AED® devices throughout the community, this initiative facilitates immediate bystander intervention, allowing citizens to respond to cardiac emergencies more effectively. This strategic deployment of automated external defibrillators (AEDs) aims to provide life-saving care before professional emergency responders can arrive at the scene.

Sameer Jafri, CEO of Avive Solutions, expressed his pride in welcoming Sandy Springs into the network of 4 Minute Communities. He described the program as a bold step that demonstrates community leadership in improving cardiac emergency responses. Jafri emphasized that the collaborative effort can serve as a replicable model for other communities nationwide, contributing to a redefined approach to Sudden Cardiac Arrest across the country.

What is the 4 Minute Community Program?

The 4 Minute Community Program revolutionizes emergency cardiac care by bridging the gap between the onset of a cardiac arrest and the arrival of emergency medical personnel. Utilizing historical data and CPR-trained citizen volunteers known as Cardiac Arrest Rapid Engagement (CARE) team members, the program enhances responsiveness during emergencies. When a cardiac emergency is reported, 911 dispatchers can activate these community responders, who will utilize a mapping system to locate the nearest AEDs and arrive promptly to provide aid.

Keith Sanders, Sandy Springs Fire Chief, remarked on the program's potential to improve survival rates significantly, reinforcing the importance of such life-saving initiatives in the community.

Intelligent Response Technology

The Avive Connect AED integrates REALConnect™ Services, enabling Intelligent Response technology to enhance the effectiveness of emergency cardiac interventions. When an alert is triggered, the devices signal with a red screen and an alarm, guiding bystanders to the scene and providing crucial instructions on performing CPR and using the AED. Given that high-quality CPR is essential for maintaining blood flow to vital organs until defibrillation can restore a normal heartbeat, the combination of the CARE team, this new AED technology, and emergency services represents a transformative approach to emergency response.

Advantages of the Program

Kim Anker, director of the Northside Hospital Foundation, emphasized the impact of community-driven technology and leadership in achieving shared goals of health and safety. Furthermore, Dr. Jeffrey Marshall, a cardiologist associated with Northside Hospital, highlighted the program’s advantage in providing real-time data and insights regarding a patient's condition in those critical first minutes of a cardiac event, ensuring better clinical decisions from the moment a patient arrives at the hospital.

Sandy Springs' commitment to enhancing emergency responses showcases its proactive stance on public safety and community welfare. By participating in the 4 Minute Community Program, residents stand to benefit from improved access to life-saving resources. As Sandy Springs works towards reducing the time to high-quality care for those experiencing cardiac arrest, the initiative is set to make a meaningful impact, ultimately saving lives across the community.
