Exploring Deep-Sea Blue Carbon through CCUS



ENEOS Corporation has recently announced its collaboration with the Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC) and the Port and Airport Research Institute (PARI) to undertake a crucial project funded by the Ministry of the Environment. This initiative, known as the 'Marine Resource Utilization for CCUS Research and Investigation for FY2025,’ aims to enhance blue carbon resources as a vital strategy for reducing carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions.

Objectives of the Research



The primary goal of this project is to investigate the behavior of seaweed within deep-sea environments and assess their ecological impacts. Blue carbon refers to the carbon captured by oceanic ecosystems, particularly in coastal habitats such as mangroves, salt marshes, and seagrasses. ENEOS aims to expand its blue carbon initiatives by analyzing the interaction between seaweed and the surrounding ecosystems, thereby promoting effective Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage (CCUS) strategies.

Together with JAMSTEC and PARI, ENEOS is set to conduct advanced investigations of deep-sea marine life, particularly focusing on seaweed's role in capturing CO2. This involves utilizing cutting-edge submersible technology to monitor and record seaweed behavior and its effects on the deep-sea environment. The research will also include simulations and analyses to model carbon storage potential and environmental impacts using intricate simulation models.

Utilization of Advanced Technology



Central to this research is the use of the manned submersible, "Shinkai 6500," which has one of the highest diving capacities in the world, reaching depths of up to 6,500 meters. This vessel will be crucial in conducting underwater explorations, capturing videos, collecting samples, and performing analyses necessary for understanding marine ecosystems.

By employing such advanced technology, ENEOS aims to gather scientific data that can inform better strategies for enhancing natural CO2 absorption and mitigating climate change.

Integrated Efforts towards Viable Solutions



ENEOS has a long history of engaging in blue carbon restoration projects and has been actively working on acquiring certifications for carbon credits, specifically the J-Blue Credit. This new initiative stands as an extension of their commitment to fostering substantial blue carbon growth through partnerships across academia, industry, and government sectors. The knowledge gained from past projects will support the acceleration of blue carbon opportunities throughout this new endeavor.

ENEOS has set ambitious targets aimed at reducing Scope 1 and 2 CO2 emissions by 73% by 2040, based on 2013 levels, and achieving carbon neutrality by 2050. Through this research initiative, the company is working toward increasing natural CO2 absorption capabilities and reducing greenhouse gas emissions as part of its commitment to a sustainable, carbon-neutral society.

With this collaboration, ENEOS is solidifying its role at the forefront of environmental innovation, moving decisively towards solutions that can enact real change in the fight against climate change through responsible utilization of marine resources.
