Purina and RedRover Announce 2025 Purple Leash Project Grants
In a remarkable initiative aimed at supporting survivors of domestic violence and their pets, Purina and RedRover are expanding their efforts with the Purple Leash Project. This year, on GivingTuesday, they unveiled the latest recipients of grants designed to provide vital resources for pet-friendly domestic violence shelters across the nation.
The Impact of the Purple Leash Project
Since its inception in 2019, the Purple Leash Project has significantly increased the availability of pet-friendly domestic violence shelters in the United States. The percentage of shelters accommodating pets has risen from less than 10% to nearly 20%. So far, the project has awarded over 60 grants, resulting in an estimated 282,825 safe nights for both survivors and their pets. This includes funding for essential renovations and supplies to ensure that individuals seeking refuge can remain with their beloved animals during their most challenging times.
Recent Grant Recipients
In 2025, Purina and RedRover awarded six grants totaling over $345,000, directly benefiting domestic violence shelters and service providers nationwide. Some of the notable recipients include:
- - Women and Children First in Pulaski County, Arkansas, receiving $60,000 to develop a new Safe Paws kennel with a grooming station.
- - International Women's House in DeKalb County, Georgia, is granted $24,200 to create secure outdoor pet play areas.
- - Mountain Comprehensive Care Center in Kentucky received $26,360 to build a secure pet play area for survivors.
- - YWCA of Greater Cincinnati in Ohio, awarded two grants totaling $115,000, will see renovations of shelter rooms for pets and the construction of pet-relief yards.
- - One Safe Place in Tarrant County, Texas, received $60,000 for a secure pet relief area and veterinary exam space.
- - New Horizons Crisis Center in Utah also received $60,000 for building covered shelter spaces for pets and essential pet care items.
The Motivation Behind the Initiative
Katie Campbell, President and CEO of RedRover, stated, "Our work with Purina has demonstrated the profound difference that allowing pets in shelters can make for survivors. It offers them a pathway to safety without leaving behind the comfort and companionship of their beloved animals. These grants are transforming lives and services in communities nationwide."
A Commitment to Hands-On Support
Beyond financial assistance, Purina has been active in converting existing spaces into dedicated, pet-friendly environments. Team members recently collaborated with YWCA Greater Cincinnati to convert a building into six specialized rooms for pets and install two pet-relief yards with play features to ensure that pets have space to exercise and explore safely.
Doubling the Impact of Contributions
In an effort to further their impact, Purina announced a dollar-for-dollar match for consumer donations towards the Purple Leash Project. Contributions made in support of this initiative will be matched up to $500,000 in 2025, amplifying the total support for domestic violence shelters significantly.
Supporting the Cause
As the holiday season approaches, Purina and RedRover encourage pet lovers to donate to the Purple Leash Project. Contributions not only help expand the number of pet-friendly domestic violence shelters but also raise awareness about this crucial cause. For those who choose to contribute monthly or make a one-time donation, exclusive rewards such as custom purple leashes or collars await as tokens of appreciation.
