Celebrating the Art of Photography: Special Dialogue Event
On August 29, 2026, a unique dialogue event titled
"A Love for Film Photography: Reading Sugimoto Note
with Yoshio Suzuki and Yataro Matsuura" will be held in Shibuya, Tokyo, hosted by the online community
Bijutsu Henshuubu. This event commemorates the launch of the new book,
Sugimoto Note: Silver Halide Photography Techniques, published by Iwanami Shoten on July 17, 2026.
The book unveils unpublished materials titled
Sugimoto Note, chronicled by contemporary artist Hiroshi Sugimoto since the mid-1970s, documenting the intricate processes involved in photography and darkroom work. The event will feature a dialogue between Yoshio Suzuki, the book's interviewer and writer, and Yataro Matsuura, an essayist and passionate advocate of film photography. Together, they will delve into Sugimoto’s creative secrets and artistic journey, making it a special event for art and photography enthusiasts.
Insights into Sugimoto Note and the New Book
The
Sugimoto Note is considered a treasure trove of insights into Sugimoto's photographic techniques, adeptly reflecting his photographic practice over decades. In the new book, Yoshio Suzuki engages Sugimoto in conversations that illuminate the vibrant and immersive atmosphere of his photographic settings from the perspective of a seasoned art journalist. The resulting narratives highlight not only Sugimoto's captivating shooting methods but also the philosophy underpinning his artistry.
A Dialogue Born from Deep Respect for Sugimoto
The event is particularly significant as Yoshio Suzuki has played an instrumental role in bringing Sugimoto's work to broader audiences since his 2005 feature in BRUTUS magazine titled
“Do You Know Hiroshi Sugimoto?” This pivotal feature helped introduce Sugimoto to the public as more than an obscure name within contemporary art. Since then, Suzuki has conducted numerous interviews, culminating in insights shared in the
Sugimoto Note.
Yataro Matsuura has a deep appreciation for the silver halide techniques that Sugimoto employs, continuing to embrace analog photography despite the digital age's dominance. This dialogue between the two prominent figures will provide a rare opportunity to explore the depths of Sugimoto's art, expressing mutual respect for his contributions to the world of photography.
