Exploring 'Atopy': A Unique Art Exhibition by Saito Miho and Koda Issei

'Atopy' Exhibition at COPYCENTER GALLERY

Starting on July 5, 2025, and running until July 12, 2025, COPYCENTER GALLERY will proudly host the art exhibition titled 'Atopy', featuring the works of two innovative artists, Saito Miho and Koda Issei.

The term 'Atopy' is derived from the Greek word 'atopia', meaning 'the unusual' or 'the place that does not exist'. This exhibition aims to present a unique perspective on the ordinary by introducing two creators who delve into the uncanny aspects of daily life, prompting viewers to reconsider their understanding of the world around them through suspended landscapes.

Saito Miho, born in 2001 and currently studying sculpture at Musashino Art University, explores the discomforts that lurk within everyday scenes. She creates non-functional objects that mimic the characteristics of materials typically designed for specific uses. Her work raises questions about our perception of objects, encouraging viewers to rethink the true nature of the familiar things they encounter daily.

On the other hand, Koda Issei, also born in 2001 and presently enrolled in Kyoto City University of Arts, employs photography to capture site-specific objects like columns, lumber, and planters. He transforms these images into three-dimensional paper-based representations, initiating a dialogue between what 'should be' and what 'cannot possibly be'. His explorative approach aims to recalibrate the distance between our perceptions of these objects and their realities.

Curated by Yukasa Narushida and with spatial design by Yotaro Suzuki, this exhibition presents a thematic exploration of 'other places' through the diverse interactions of the artists' works concerning distance, scale, and perception. It serves as an opportunity for visitors to rediscover their gaze toward the ordinary and reaffirm its authenticity.

Artists' Backgrounds

Saito Miho focuses on creating sculptures that challenge our understanding of everyday objects. By using industrial materials, she conjures items that exist without any specific functional conversation, urging audiences to question the essence of their everyday encounters.

Koda Issei concentrates on the relationship between site-specific objects and our perception of them. His works express the discrepancies between the tangible existence of these items and how we interpret them in our minds, inviting viewers to reassess the distance between their physical presence and visual representation.
