Shanghai Electric Forms Strategic Alliances for Renewable Energy Projects in the Middle East

Shanghai Electric's Commitment to Renewable Energy

In early April, Shanghai Electric (SEHK: 2727, SSE: 601727) achieved a significant milestone by entering into two strategic agreements with major players in the Middle East's renewable energy sector. These partnerships involve collaboration on a groundbreaking photovoltaic project with Masdar, known for its commitment to sustainability, and a comprehensive cooperation agreement with Mawarid Group, which specializes in wind energy solutions. Both initiatives uphold the energy transition goals outlined in Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 and Oman’s Vision 2040.

The Groundbreaking Solar Project

The photovoltaic project, titled Sadawi, boasts a massive capacity of 2 gigawatts and is set in Saudi Arabia in partnership with Masdar. This project stands as the largest EPC solar development undertaken by Shanghai Electric on a global scale. Covering an expansive area of approximately 40 square kilometers, Sadawi is projected to generate over 6,000 million kWh per year, fulfilling the energy needs of around 700,000 homes. Additionally, it aims to curb carbon emissions by approximately 3 million tons.

Utilizing advanced photovoltaic technology, this initiative seeks to maximize the utilization of Saudi Arabia’s abundant sunlight, positioning itself as a cornerstone of the nation’s National Renewable Energy Program.

Collaboration in Wind Energy

In Oman, the partnership between Shanghai Electric and Mawarid Group encompasses the provision of wind turbines, technology transfers, and the design of local manufacturing facilities. This endeavor is crafted to harness Oman’s natural resources effectively, foster a local supply chain, and drive long-term economic growth.

Wu Lei, the president of Shanghai Electric Group, expressed optimism about this collaboration, stating, "This marks a new beginning for Shanghai Electric and Masdar in comprehensive cooperation, as well as a significant step for Shanghai Electric to strengthen its presence in the emerging energy market of the Middle East. We look forward to setting a benchmark demonstration project and contributing to the global energy transition."

Masdar’s CEO, Mohamed Jameel Al Ramahi, emphasized the value of their partnership, expressing eagerness to deepen cooperation in wind, solar, energy storage, and more areas in the pursuit of a transformational shift in global energy structures.

Oman’s Minister of Energy and Minerals, Salim Al Aufi, praised Shanghai Electric’s technological prowess in wind energy and acknowledged the government’s commitment to fostering this partnership. He highlighted the potential for expanded collaboration in sectors such as energy storage, hydrogen energy, and solar energy, as both nations work towards transformative changes in the energy sector.

Wu Lei mentioned that Oman’s Vision 2040 and Green Hydrogen Strategy align well with Shanghai Electric’s strategic development goals. "We aim to leverage this project as an opportunity to integrate advanced technologies and high-quality products into the new energy sector, utilizing Oman’s resource strengths and market potential. Through technology licensing and the establishment of a local supply chain, we seek to implement more high-quality projects, contribute to Oman’s energy transformation, and open a new chapter in Sino-Arab energy cooperation."

The Strategic Importance of the Agreements

The agreements have substantial strategic and industrial significance. The wind energy project in Oman is expected to catalyze the country’s transition from traditional energy sources to diversified clean energies, such as wind and hydrogen, while deepening the technical cooperation between China and Arab nations. Concurrently, the photovoltaic initiative in Saudi Arabia directly supports the kingdom’s objectives to reduce reliance on fossil fuels, diversify its economy, and lay the groundwork for expanded growth for Shanghai Electric in the Middle East's solar market.

This dual collaboration in the Middle East underscores Shanghai Electric's commitment to a technology-focused and localized approach, reinforcing its position as a global leader in renewable energies, driven by its expertise and innovative solutions in both wind and solar sectors.
