From Pipes to Pastures: Jim Massengale's Journey in Agriculture

In 2011, Jim co-founded United Poly Systems, LLC, a company that specialized in polyethylene pipes for telecommunications and the oil and gas sectors. Fueled by over 40 years of combined experience with his partner, Bert Bridges, the duo turned United Poly Systems into a powerhouse in the industry. With more than 120,000 miles of pipe produced in just the first ten years, their operations significantly contributed to building infrastructure that we rely on every day. Jim recalls, "We had all the confidence in the world we could do it... we knew we had the right team and just needed the right people to start the business."

However, after decades of dedication to the manufacturing sector, Jim decided it was time for a change. In 2017, he made a leap of faith into the world of farming. He purchased 30 cows and acquired 187 acres of land as a means to explore a simpler life in agriculture. The initial plan was modest; Jim thought that farming would serve as his retirement venture. But this venture turned into an expansive operation that soon required more time and effort than he had anticipated. Within a short span, he found himself overseeing over 3,000 acres of land and 450 cows, transforming his retirement endeavor into a full-time commitment.

Reflecting on this unexpected shift, Jim shared, "With this growth, we decided to start crop farming and silage, and with that had to purchase hay equipment along with a variety of other pieces." He elaborated on the meticulous approach he took in amassing quality equipment from across the nation.

This rapid expansion in farming led Jim to seek ways to streamline operations. The demands of his new life required help, prompting him to reach out to Richard Spacek, a territory sales manager at Purple Wave Auction. Jim decided to hold a no-reserve online auction for his farming equipment, marking an end to his farming chapter. "We're proud of what we got and know if we go out and get in any piece it will perform," he remarked, emphasizing the quality of his well-maintained machinery.

The results of the May 15 retirement auction were impressive; items sold ranged from brand-new innovations like a Massey Ferguson baler to tractors that attracted significant bids, including a 2012 John Deere 8285R and a 2014 John Deere 6190R. Jim's heartfelt sentiment towards his favorite piece of machinery, a self-propelled John Deere 235 cutter, stood out during this reflection. "I like to cut hay, it's autosteer and it's a learning experience for me; I'll miss that piece the most," Jim stated, showcasing his passion for both farming and machinery.

The auction was not only a farewell to the equipment but also represented Jim's legacy in both manufacturing and farming. Every piece of equipment, emblematic of years of hard work and dedication, found new owners who would likely continue the agricultural legacy Jim had built. His son, Trey, played a crucial role in helping navigate the technological aspects of farming, showcasing that innovation continues even within family businesses, no matter how established they are.
