Tampa General Hospital and Muma Children’s Hospital Reaffirm Level I Trauma Center Status
Tampa, Florida is home to Tampa General Hospital (TGH) and Muma Children's Hospital, both of which recently received
renewed verification as a Level I Trauma Center from the American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma (ACS COT). This prestigious status has a validity period extending to
January 29, 2029, underscoring TGH's commitment to delivering top-tier trauma care in the West Florida region.
In a statement, John Couris, president and CEO of Florida Health Sciences Center, expressed pride in their dedicated team and stressed the significance of providing critical trauma services. “This renewal is a testament to our extraordinarily dedicated team and how effectively we collaborate across disciplines to deliver the best care possible,” he said. As the only ACS-verified Level I Trauma Center in West Florida, TGH recognizes the profound responsibility it holds in caring for patients in their most vulnerable moments.
The verification process required adherence to stringent criteria ensuring optimal care capabilities, which involved a comprehensive on-site review. This assessment evaluated the hospital’s operational framework, including physician leadership that supports trauma care, nursing coverage, and overall patient outcomes. Moreover, the review highlighted Tampa General's dedication to continuous performance improvement and harm prevention strategies. Such initiatives culminated in a
Trauma Quality Improvement (TQIP) report naming TGH among the top 30% nationally for severe traumatic brain injury mortality outcomes.
Commitment to Care and Education
Within the assessment, Tampa General’s neurotrauma and orthopedic programs were recognized as operational strengths. Additionally, the organization’s collaboration with
USF Health cultivates not only exceptional care delivery but also crucial training for the next generation of trauma surgeons. The integration of innovative facilities, such as the
Center for Advanced Medical Learning and Simulation (CAMLS), reinforces the educational aspect of TGH's trauma program by expanding training opportunities.
Melissa Golombek, DNP, executive vice president and president of Tampa General, shared her perspective on the achievement, stating, “This Level I re-verification reflects years of intentional investment in our people, our processes, and our patients.” This affirmation of TGH’s standards and quality strengthens its community role as a leading trauma care center.
Notably, Tampa General also participates in the ACS Trauma Quality Improvement Program, which delivers risk-adjusted benchmarking to continually refine patient care. Furthermore, the hospital has achieved the
ACS Surgical Quality Partner designation, underscoring its commitment to operational excellence.
A Safety Net for the Community
As a dedicated institution, Tampa General serves as a pivotal safety net for severely injured patients across Tampa Bay, confirming its vital role in the region's public health landscape. Michele Moran, senior vice president of emergency services, emphasized that trauma care is a collaborative effort, with the verification acknowledging the exhaustive endeavors of all the professionals involved in patient care.
