Embarking on a Nationwide Celebration: The Japanese Drunken Project 2026

Embrace the Spirit of Japan with the Japanese Drunken Project 2026

This summer, a unique event is set to roll out across Japan, inviting sake enthusiasts to enjoy a nationwide celebration of culture, community, and the craft of sake. The initiative, known as the Japanese Drunken Project 2026, will launch on July 29, 2026, and it aims to rekindle the nation's appreciation for its traditional alcoholic beverage. Founded by Ineto Agave Co., based in Oga, Akita Prefecture, this project builds upon a successful event run in Tokyo and Osaka last year.

The Japanese Drunken Project embodies a redefined understanding of 'drunkenness.' While the term typically refers to a state of excessive inebriation, the project's philosophy shifts this perspective to embrace the joy of experiencing Japan's vibrant culture through its exceptional beverage offerings. Ineto Agave is committed to using sake as a medium to celebrate and preserve Japan's rich cultural heritage, particularly in light of recent declines in sake consumption, especially among younger generations.

Reviving Japanese Culture through Sake

Japan's sake industry faces challenges with diminishing domestic consumption, partly due to changing preferences among younger demographics. This shift not only threatens individual breweries and businesses but also places traditional practices in jeopardy. Sake, an emblem of Japanese culture, has been meticulously refined over centuries. Through the Japanese Drunken Project, Ineto Agave aims to connect traditional sake brewing techniques with modern creativity, showcasing a new genre known as Craft Sake.

This new form of sake incorporates unique ingredients while respecting age-old brewing methods. In 2022, Ineto Agave helped establish the Craft Sake Brewery Association to promote diversity in sake production, merging passion with tradition to forge a path that resonates with the future of the industry.

A Nationwide Celebration

The project will unfold over two months, from late July to September, culminating in a final event on November 7 and 8 in Oga. The celebration will transcend geographical boundaries, reaching cities such as Nagoya, Sendai, Hokkaido (Yoichi/Sapporo), Tokyo, Oga, Fukuoka, Amakusa, Hiroshima, Kobe, Kyoto, and Kanazawa. The initiative will feature collaborations with local restaurants and liquor stores, seminars, conferences, and various promotional events in department stores.

As articulated by Ineto Agave's CEO, Osamu Okazumi, the essence of this year’s project is about sharing the joy of sake across Japan, engaging with both new and traditional consumers. Okazumi reflects on the previous year's challenges, recognizing the need to expand beyond urban confines to create a truly national experience. In light of increasing skepticism toward alcohol consumption, this celebration aims to highlight the positive aspects of social drinking while maintaining a balanced outlook towards responsible consumption.

Join the Toast

The spirit of the Japanese Drunken Project is about far more than just beverages; it’s an invitation to participate in an experience that intertwines history, culture, and community. As Okazumi notes,
