Taking a Step Towards the Future
In a commendable initiative to reduce environmental impact and promote resource circulation, Storage King Co., based in Ichikawa, Chiba (CEO: Shigero Arakawa, Securities Code: 2997), has embarked on a project that repurposes 16 used 20-foot containers. Previously utilized at the "Tani Zaka Trunk Room" in Adachi, Tokyo, these containers are being refurbished and relocated to the "Fukuroi Minato Trunk Room" in Fukuroi, Shizuoka Prefecture (located at Minato Aza Masu 574-2).
Traditionally, new containers manufactured overseas are imported and set up as trunk rooms. This time, however, Storage King has taken an innovative approach by reusing domestically used containers, aiming to significantly cut down on CO₂ emissions associated with their production and transportation, while establishing a sustainable resource utilization model.
CO₂ Emission Evaluation (Scopes 1-4)
This project has been evaluated according to Japan’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism’s “Land Transportation Evaluation Value Calculation Survey” and the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry's “Supply Chain Emission Calculation Guidelines.” The findings are as follows:
| Scope | Description | Emissions (kg CO₂) |
|---|
| - | --- | ------ |
| Scope 1 | Domestic truck transport (Tokyo to Fukuroi, approx. 197 km) | 49.3 |
| Scope 2 | Power usage for painting operations (5 kWh/container x 0.4 kg/kWh) | 32.00 |
| Scope 3 | Avoided new container production (2,200 kg/container x 1.8 kg CO₂/kg) | 63,360.00 (reduction) |
| Scope 4 | Avoided maritime transportation (China to Japan, approx. 1,800 km) | 1,056.00 (reduction) |
Note: The estimation for Scope 4's maritime transport avoidance assumes an emissions factor of 15g CO₂/TEU·km based on guidelines from Clean Cargo Working Group, applying it across an average container ship’s typical operational parameters.
Overall Evaluation and Environmental Impact
- - Total emissions from reuse (Scope 1 + 2): 81.30 kg
- - CO₂ emissions avoided through new production and transport (Scope 3 + 4): 64,416.00 kg
- - Net CO₂ reduction: 64,334.70 kg
This reduction is equivalent to the annual CO₂ emissions of approximately 17 passenger cars. (Assuming an average of 3.8 tons of CO₂ emissions per passenger car annually).
Social and Environmental Significance
- - Promotion of Resource Circulation: Reduction of steel waste and its recycling
- - Supply Chain Optimization: Improvement in ESG evaluation through Scope 3 emission reduction
- - Community Contribution: Boosting the local economy by collaborating with local painting contractors
- - Building a Sustainable Logistics Model: Enhancing transport efficiency and reducing environmental burden through reuse

About Storage King Co.
Our company operates under the philosophy of co-creating the future of people's lives and society through the sustained enhancement of customer asset values. We engage in the planning, development, operation, and management of self-storage trunk rooms. Currently, we operate over 205 stores and more than 11,900 storage units, mainly in Tokyo and Okayama.
The penetration rate of trunk rooms in Japan is said to be less than 1%, significantly lower compared to countries like the United States, where it stands at about 10%. Although it may be unfamiliar in Japan, customers who experience our services often express satisfaction, as they find their spaces decluttered and more organized for seasonal adjustments in belongings, cherished collections, and even emergency supplies.
Our goal is to provide a clean, safe storage experience that enhances our customers’ homes and offices while meeting the growing societal demand for trunk room services.
