MSA Safety Launches A1X: Next-Gen WinGrip Vacuum Anchor for Aviation Maintenance

MSA Safety Unveils the A1X Vacuum Anchor for Aircraft Maintenance

MSA Safety, a leader in safety solutions, has introduced the A1X™, the newest vacuum anchor in their renowned WinGrip® line. This next-generation product aims to enhance the safety, efficiency, and adaptability of aircraft maintenance practices.

The A1X represents a significant development from the previous models in MSA's AIO (All-In-One) WinGrip system. It is designed to be lighter and more compact, fitting the evolving needs of modern aviation maintenance. Through innovative vacuum suction technology, the A1X permits maintenance teams to establish a secure, non-invasive anchor point on aircraft wing surfaces, enabling safe operations without risking damage to the aircraft.

Innovative Design Features

One of the standout features of the A1X is its operational design. It operates using refillable air or gas cylinders to maintain the necessary suction pressure for secure anchoring. Weighing only 7 kg, the A1X is 35% lighter than its predecessor and has a reduced diameter of 350 mm compared to 480 mm, making it more portable and easier to handle in the field.

Furthermore, the newly engineered pneumatic system effectively doubles the number of anchor points that can be established with a single cylinder, minimizing the need for technicians to carry multiple replacement cylinders during crucial maintenance operations.

Expanded Aircraft Compatibility

The enhanced compatibility of the A1X vacuum anchor stands as one of its most notable advancements. Due to the smaller size of the suction cups, the A1X can now serve various smaller aircraft that were previously outside the purview of the WinGrip technology, including business jets and commercial airliners. It has received approval from major aircraft manufacturers like Airbus and Boeing, urging maintenance teams to confidently incorporate it into their standard operating procedures.

Versatile for All Environments

Another key aspect of the A1X is its adaptability to different environments. The design is intentionally devoid of any electronic components, allowing it to be employed safely in areas where fuel vapors may be present, such as during refueling operations. This features eliminates any ignition risks associated with electronics. Real-time status updates are provided through an integrated acoustic alarm system that also maintains suction integrity during any flow interruptions.

The A1X is fully integrated within its own air cylinder, requiring no external air supply or fixed infrastructure for operation. This versatility ensures effective performance in various conditions, whether in a maintenance hangar, on the tarmac, or in remote locations.

Optimized for A and B Checks

The design of the WinGrip A1X vacuum anchor is particularly suited for the aircraft maintenance industry's A and B checks, where speed and flexibility are vital. Its portability allows a single technician to independently position and reattach anchor points without needing overhead safety line infrastructure or additional personnel. For more extensive C and D checks, MSA still provides its complete WinGrip systems that incorporate full safety lines to support multiple technicians working simultaneously on the aircraft wings.

Customer-Centric Innovation

Jose Sanchez, Senior Vice President of MSA Safety and President of the EMEA division, notes, “The A1X vacuum anchor was designed based on feedback from those who use WinGrip daily. We understand that if equipment is not used, it does not protect anyone. Therefore, our focus is to eliminate barriers between a technician and their safety equipment.” The result is a highly effective and mobile WinGrip anchor that accommodates a broader range of aircraft types than ever before. In an industry where every moment matters, we believe the A1X sets a new standard for aircraft maintenance at heights.

The A1X comes equipped with two anchor points, including a primary vacuum anchoring unit and a secondary ‘flying’ anchor for triangular configurations. Each set can be tailored to meet specific customer requirements, including a unique air cylinder, pressure line, and personal protective equipment.

Launch and Availability

The A1X vacuum anchor will be showcased at the MRO Europe event in October 2026, where the MSA Safety team will offer product demonstrations and personalized consultations to interested parties. For further information about the A1X vacuum anchor, visit MSA Safety's official website.
