Segra Expands Network Connectivity with New Fiber Route
Segra, a prominent player in the fiber network industry, has recently announced a significant upgrade to its network infrastructure with a new direct inland fiber route from Myrtle Beach Cable Landing Station to Charlotte, North Carolina. This expansion is crucial for meeting the increasing demands of hyperscale and international network providers who are in need of enhanced connectivity options.
The new inland route will create a pathway from Myrtle Beach to Florence, South Carolina, and then further to Charlotte. This development aims to bolster the existing high-capacity core network that Segra operates, addressing the growing requirements for diverse and resilient connectivity among the subsea network community. As the only direct inland route from Myrtle Beach, this move signals a substantial investment in infrastructure crucial for developing more diverse network options.
David Cromwell, Segra’s Chief Technology Officer, emphasized the importance of this project, stating, "Our unique geographic positioning allows us to provide the subsea network community with a low-latency, high-capacity pathway that enhances network redundancy and reliability for our hyperscale and international carrier customers.” This enhancement in connectivity is particularly vital as network providers seek reliable solutions that can support advancements in cloud services, artificial intelligence, and more.
Technical Innovations
Segra's new route promises unique benefits, including low latency connectivity and advanced operational technology. The project employs the Ciena 6500 platform, which is powered by the WaveLogic 5 Extreme 800G coherent optics. This cutting-edge technology will facilitate high data rates, thereby increasing bandwidth, optimizing network resources, and offering scalable solutions tailored to the escalating demands of users.
This new inland fiber route will start with an impressive capacity of 20.4 terabits per second (Tbps) right from Day 1 of operation, with the prospect of expanding this capacity in response to future needs. Such capacity is especially favorable for hyperscale, AI, and international network providers, as it will support various applications, including cloud computing, AI innovations, and edge services.
The construction of this fiber route is set to commence in the third quarter of 2025, with an anticipated completion in the second quarter of 2026. During this timeframe, Segra aims to mitigate any potential interruptions and ensure the stable progression of network enhancements that will ultimately benefit its customers.
